Metro Goes to Plan B to Deliver Transit Projects in This Lifetime
I understand that there is a growing effort to reform prop 13 and allow local transit measures such as R and J to pass with 51% rather than the current 66.6%, but I hope that Metro doesn’t wait for that to pan out before they try again. Many in the transit community feel that it could pass if tried again with some changes and better publicity.
I’ve always said, shut down the 405 over the Sepulveda pass and you’ll fix a huge part of west LA’s traffic problem (area bounded by Santa Monica to Hollywood to LAX).
The two lightest days of traffic I have ever seen in LA were Carmageddon in 2011 and the first day of the Skirball fire in 2017. Both because the 405 over the Sepulveda pass was shut down.
Gov Vetoes Budget, Fight Breaks Out Over Redevelopment Money
Are you not aware that until this year, budgets had to have a 2/3 vote in both houses of the legislature to pass? What this means is that Republicans effectively had veto power over any budget, and they blocked anything they didn’t like, knowing that suckers who weren’t paying attention would pin the blame on the Democrats. The Republicans had power but no responsibility. It still takes a 2/3 vote to pass a new tax.
Over who’s land will that HSR have to pass from Victorville to Vegas? Seems to me Sen. Harry Reid bought up a lot of that scrub dessert land a few years back. Wouldn’t it be something if the HSR had to buy the " Right of Way" from him??He and Horsford, here in Nevada have been been pushing this program for some time now. Me thinks it doesn’t pass the smell test.
LA's Signature Dingbat Apartments Very Bad News in a 'Quake
SF just made up a list and requires owners to do the upgrades BUT the cost is a pass through to the tenants (100% of cost). This assumes the landlord even bothers. I live in one and our landlord doesn’t plan on doing anything nor will he charge the pass through cost, because he lives overseas and doesn’t care!
LA is encouraging developers to put denser housing near transit. Here’s how.
Atkins plucked SB50 out of Portantino’s committee so he can’t block it for another year. It bet it will pass. I’m just wondering if its opponents will feel a little abashed by their hysteria afterwards.
Report on NBC's Universal Evolution Almost As Large As Project Itself
@conq: "Buh-bye MTA project. It was too dense and nefarious to be true. This plan makes much, much, MUCH more sense."
That’s a seperate project.
@surfnspy: "Too much. The roads are gridlocked already. MUCH would have to be done to prep for this. Cahuenga pass, 101 on/off ramps. "
So? If the developer is willing to spend tens of millions on traffic relief, fine by me.
"And face it, true this would create construction jobs, but all the new retail is just more lower wage jobs."
So you’d rather have no jobs at all then lower wage jobs? Why not let young adults and teenagers get those jobs? Work experience, extra dough in their young spend-craving pockets…..common sense, really. But then again, common sense doesn’t exist in the LA area…..
"WHere where the jobs come from that people will need to buy or rent these residences?"
From other areas of town.
"People will need to make well into the six figures to afford"
How do you know?
"and those jobs are evaporating like a puddle of rainwater in the mojave desert."
So we put a big magnifying glass over the puddle….. wow…..that’s logical thinking…..
@guest #26: "Universal has been bullying the residents of Lake Hollywood for decades. In the 60’s Universal refused to give up land to create a 101N to 134E interchange which destroyed Barham blvd as people use that street to cut through to the 134 and Burbank. This is just more garbage."
Wrong, what’s garbage is your nonsensical job-killing ideology. You, as well as countless other Neighborhood Councils and Homeowner Associations are destroying our economy with idiotic regulation. I bet a lot of you homeowners are self-proclaimed Republicans/Conservatives that want private investments, but only where it’s convenient for you…..or in other words…..nowhere.
@guest #27: "Call me an old-timer, (or maybe just an old-school movie buff)"
How about this:
Hello NIMBY…..welcome to Curbed LA…..now get ready for a thrashing…..
but I’m disappointed that the historic Universal backlot, one of the earliest movie production areas that helped make LA what it is today, is planned on being leveled (some say it merits official historic recognition and preservation).
"Needless to say, this town has never really put anything before profit"
Umm, private investment = profit…..
"Good-paying jobs are cool; low-paying retail and food service ones are not."
Riiiiight…..we get to have the luxury of being picky about what jobs can come here!!!
