The Crenshaw Station Debate--Dispatches from the Subway Meeting
I agree that there should be no station here as the numbers just don’t pan out for it. 1,300 riders – that’s it. Also, a minute of extra time doesn’t seem like much, but a minute here and a minute there and suddenly people aren’t using the system as they’ll just say it is faster to drive. Subway stations aren’t like light rail stops – these things are expensive.
Why not use that $153M to move that silly VA stop in the middle of nowhere to Barrington/Wilshire, which currently has no station in any phase of the project? Barrington/Wilshire is far more dense than Crenshaw/Wilshire.
Subway to the Sea Moving Right Along: Station Debates, Construction Plans*
@Dan W.: Topography has a huge effect on how far people will walk to/from transit. With a station at Wilshire/Western, you are asking UCLA riders both to walk the farthest possible distance, but also uphill. To maximize the numbers of people who will use rail to Westwood, the station should be up near Le Conte. Anyone who works along Wilshire will not be dissuaded by the flat and amenity-filled walk from Wilshire to Le Conte.
Beverly Hills Getting Two Stops on "Subway to the Sea"
here, now in my new #15 outfit. Like it?
I think Beverly Dr. & Wilshire is pretty good, but it could be Wilshire & SM instead. Not far away from each other. Also, yes, it’s a long way from BH to Westwood – but first of all, you have the Wilshire Country Club taking up half of it. No need for a stop there. And then you have all the richies on the Golden Corridor or whatever they call it. Frankly, no need for a stop there either.
CicLAvia's Third Anniversary Event Returns to Downtown Roots
@guest #3: LACBC had ‘rules of the road’ pamphlets at both the Venice and Wilshire CicLAvias. They were available at the LACBC booths and at all of the CicLAvia hubs. There were free kids’ bike safety workshops running all day – in Culver City at the Venice event, and near Wilshire/Fairfax at the Wilshire event. http://la-bike.org/news/introducing-bike-safe-rules-road-pocket-guide
LACMA May Pay for Extra Entrance at Purple Line Fairfax Stop
"We’d guess that Metro is more inclined to have additional entrances at a busy subway stop like Fairfax, especially when one will be paid for by an outside party."
I think you got this wrong, it sounds like LACMA is willing to pay for the north Wilshire/Orange Grove portal (with Metro paying for the south one), not anything near Wilshire/Fairfax. And the fact that the reason the group for the disabled is against the W/OG stop is because a one there means the elimination of the Wilshire/Fairfax portal completely.
Now Building in Koreatown, Mid-City West, and Skid Row
@Jeff Jacobberger:
Only one problem – zoning does not permit.
La Brea has fairly deep commercial zoning, whereas most other nearby major streets do not.
And from 4th/6th, Wilshire might be a long walk for some, depending on which end of the project one starts from.
Actually, Wilshire has the only other really deep commercial zoning, yet somehow I do not envision OSH on Wilshire Blvd., do you?
Fairfax between Olympic and Sixth is undergoing a lot of changes due to the LACMA expansion. They are trying to encourage thru traffic on Fairfax and Wilshire, and discourage thru traffic on Sixth. In a few more months, there will be more lanes to choose from on Fairfax.
After that problem is resolved, DOT and MTA will probably start on the Wilshire resurfacing for the BRT project, so Wilshire between Koreatown and Beverly Hills will be a nightmare for a year or so.
so with the ass-hat, the under-construction 5500 wilshire, viridian (or viridiot, rather – i think i’ll adopt that one)… how many new units have been/will be added to the miracle mile?
yet the subway doesn’t extend here.
and when was the last time Wilshire was re-paved?
have you ever taken the bus along wilshire? i’ve almost bitten my tongue off when the bus hits those potholes… dreadful ride…
I disagree that it is better to do nothing. That has been our approach for most of the last 50 years. This project will bring additional capacity on Wilshire west of the 405 going Eastbound, where it is needed most.
Sure, it would be great to have all of Wilshire on this, but Beverly Hills and Condo Canyon can be added afterwards once people get comfortable with it. Also, much of the $30M is going to repaving the street. Wilshire is a mess – don’t we want to repave it now.
