The Media Makes Too Much Positive Dan Gilbert Clickbait
Perhaps you can explain to me why Gilbert, or his company, would be responsible for anyone’s mortgage issues.
I’ll go through a typical home purchasing process.
You as a person see a house and agree with the seller to a price. Let’s call it 100K.
You get out a loan for 100K, or whatever the amount is at an agreed upon interest rate by you (either fixed or floating) and a duration.
For whatever reason, you fail to make payments on your loan.
By doing so, the owner of your loan, takes possession of their property as you have’t paid for it yet.
Are you trying to condone stealing (i.e. letting someone stay in a home when they haven’t paid for it at the agreed upon price)? That’s what it sounds like?
How would you feel if your bike, car or personal items were "stolen"?
Here's the New State Fairgrounds Redevelopment Plan
Cars will be king in Detroit for a "long, long time" because – aside from Gilbert – we don’t have actual leaders in the development game. They are inherently following trends from the 50s & 60s. The more developments I see like this, the more I think maybe Detroit isn’t for me. I have been optimistic that developers with capital have gotten the urban religion. But instead they chicken out with "hybrid" thinking. There are no hybrid models that works. If it’s not 100% urban then it’s just suburban and cars will dominate – sadly, it’s a slippery slope. This is the sort of short term compromise that will keep that area grounded for a very long time. We deserve better.
Dan Gilbert talks jobs, new office tenants, and more skyscrapers in Detroit
New construction of office space will be the true tipping point. Gratifying to hear the "job for everyone who wants a job" talk. Creating a vibrant city with equal opportunity for everyone is the key to avoiding the pitfalls of the past. Detroit was the poster child for how to do so many things wrong, but if the cards play out well, it could be a shining example of sustainable, equitable reinvention. Fingers crossed that though all the bluster and foot-in-mouth, Trump will actually be a positive force for cities at the end of the day. Though not a perfect guy, either, If the economy holds up for another 10 – 15 years, Gilbert will go down as the great city (re)builder of modern times.
Gilbert offers economic impact study for fail jail site; county not swayed
As an MPA student and one familiar with analyzing cost/ benefit analysis and the perceived economic benefit of having a sports team, I think Warren Evan’s is being rather prudent and his concerns are apparently not being addressed properly. All that glitters isn’t gold and simply because wayne county has had years of ineptitude by county executives, doesn’t mean Evan’s should roll over at the next potential development that makes all these flashy promises. Perhaps it’s stating the obvious, but we can’t simply demolish a jail with no ready replacement. Why can’t Gilbert address Evan’s concerns on this and then can accurately assess which plan is truly the best for tax payers?
Hudson’s tower may not be tallest in state, other updates from Bedrock
Do you really believe that Dan Gilbert isn’t very important Inside his related companies? If so, I disagree, because I think he is important, and this is kind of a big deal.
My understanding is that he was a strong voice for a vision that others within the company would have otherwise objected to on purely financial grounds, if he was not there.
It’s also a pretty textbook reaction to losing a CEO, or for when a CEO’s health is in question. Companies switch to a sort of "safe mode" for a number of reasons. One of those reasons is for the stability of the company and projects. But, in these situations the projects do tend to change because of it.
Even the "robber barons" of the 19th century were civic-minded enough to realize the importance of contributing to the welfare of the cities they lived in through the establishment of foundations, trusts & charities. Not so the "LEECHS & MORONS" of Detroit. As billionaires; their sole purpose is to reap ungainly wealth with not one iota of civic pride or responsibility. Unlike Gilbert, who has added to the growth, texture & rhythm of this city; the "Slumlords of Detroit" squeeze every penny, nickel & dime from the inept local & state governments they can contractually get. Anyway; it’s their money so a legacy as "DETROITSLUMLORDS" will be a fitting epitaph.
$310 million, two skyscraper development coming to Midtown
I believe the site was priced solely on location. The heart of midtown and the qline stop next door. North of Mack Avenue really is the best piece of land for this development. I question the timeline as optimistic unless there are shortcuts planned for construction. I’ve read of new methods to build skyscrapers that speed the process up, but it will be a first for Detroit. I think a 2021-22 is more achievable. Even Dan Gilbert didn’t get Hudson and Monroe Blocks started on the initial timeline. That being said, each developer has their own style and maybe much has been done behind the scenes. I still would place bets this project will be completed before little Caesars HQ.
Problem is, the National had been a nice LITTLE theatre. Ask Chuck Forbes how his equally little Gem Theatre is doing after his valiant and thankfully successful effort to save it from the Ilitches. As I recall, one of the National’s claims to fame when it opened was constructing it as a completely fireproof building – all the electric lines are buried in its concrete, impacting on rewiring the place. The stagehouse is inadequate for just about anything except show-and-tell presentations and support facilities including a box office are pretty much non-existent. However, the facade is remarkable and deserving of preservation, as is the Pewabic tile foyer. Nice that "adaptive re-use" is planned for the facade. Wonder if Gilbert will just bust up the foyer and sell the tile.
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I agree with you guys. This is favoritism. Gilbert and the Ilitches don’t seem to have to deal with these murky and unequal standards.
The Council should be concerned and care, but this is not the correct way to do it.
Remember how mad they (the City Council) got when the correct process was bypassed for the creation of "Spirit Plaza"?
I had bad service at a McDonald’s. Should they stop McDonald’s from expanding? You know, a toilet didn’t work in the new Cobo. Maybe they should’ve stopped them from expanding it?? Too late now. Also, Starbucks wants to add more stores, but one I visited had awful customer service and dirty tables…. also the store was shaped funny. It wasn’t normal. Yelp had a few bad reviews for Quicken Loans. I walked in front of the QL offices the other day and there was trash in front on the sidewalk. The workers don’t seem to really care about what they do to the city by just dumping their trash. This isn’t what Detroit needs if we want a vibrant Detroit. I think the council should shut down the Hudson project until Gilbert gets his staff in line.
