Another Sexy Mid-Century Bites the Dust in Bev Hills
@photopug: SO GLAD you are one of the appreciative ones (re: Trousdale). I have been gratified to find the people who restore slightly outnumber the ones who destroy, in that little colony. Have you seen this? www.Trousdale-OverTheTop.com.
Here’s the other thing, having been a BH-watcher since childhood, esp since this tear-down craze really started in the ‘70s. Can anyone name ANY house that is BETTER than the one it replaced? I’ll open this up even outside Beverly Hills, let’s go to Holmby, Bel-Air, Swish Alps (Hollywood Hills)… NAMEONE grand old estate or MCM palace that was taken down and something better erected in its place? Seriously!
Illustrating Beachwood's Hollywood Sign Tourist Traffic Problem
No. It isn’t. The Eiffel Tower isn’t in a residential neighborhood. Nor is the Grand Canyon. That sign exists because of the houses beneath it. Not the other way around. It almost became extinct not that long ago. A little decent? Are you insane? What we allow to go on up here in the name of that sign should qualify us as docents.
This is a RESIDENTIAL neighborhood. Not Universal City. Not Disneyland. The neighborhood beneath the sign is just as historically significant as the sign itself. The failure of the city to enforce parking and traffic laws up here is not our fault. If this were Bel-Air I guarantee you that this would be solved in about a day and a half.
Why can’t YOU be nice and respect the parking and traffic laws of our neighborhood?
@guest #15: Great post. I know for a fact LA city gives two shits about even wealthy area’s like Brentwood and Homlby Hills. They can’t even get their roads paved and street lamps put in on dark streets, or fix the sidewalks. Call 911 and see how fast they really are in wealthy parts. It take the same dam 3-5 minuets to get a operator. Only if you live in Santa Monica, Culver City, Beverly Hills, WEHO etc will your roads be paved better and 911 is not a joke. That’s because these places are smaller and better managed by city halls and city leaders who also lives in the area. Go to Bel Air, some parts have the worst roads in the city. Complain see if city hall cares. The Mayor and city leaders don’t live there, out of sight out of mind as they say.
did anyone see the commonality of the names on the list? it’s generally b or c level celebrities…although i hate to use the word celebrity for some of those names. yes there are real actors on the list but exception not the rule. it’s purely economic as someone wrote above.
these folks don’t have KIMCO ceo money or crazy wild chinese obligarchy dough. making $10mm a year (on the optimistic side) giving half to taxes, 10-20 percent to manage…10 percent to agent, legal accounting…all blah blah blah and you don’t end up with enough to support a $15mm home in bel air or beverly hills. landcaping alone is $100,000 which is like 10% of their net net net income. why do curbed folks always avoid the simple truth of things here: economically drive.
Sad Blue Line-Adjacent Long Beach Buildings Getting Upgraded
@guest #15: Metro system won’t solve anything it will make the city more unbearable and crime ridden. Soon gang members can get a subway and go to the beach. Remember when the gang members held up the pier arcade in Santa Monica? Wait that will be normal once Subway to the sea and metro is fully implemented, fights, home theft, and shooting in Santa Monica will seen normal. I don’t get way all you folks want to subsidize poor people traveling around L.A. you pay taxes so others get a free ride? Only area’s with no metro will be safe and decent: Malibu, PV, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and that’s about it. The rest of the city will decay or be overrun during the day by the poor and uncivilized.
Handsome SaMo Craftsman On Half Acre Asking $8.495MM
@Bel Air Dreams: I know a good eye doctor, not far from both houses.
Seriously, you don’t see the expertly milled wood (which is from the type of trees that simply aren’t around anymore), the livably sized rooms, the sheer relaxing comfort of the place? ‘Cause that’s what I see. When I look at the house in the link you provided, you’re right, it is much more flashy — but those oversized spaces and hard, shiny surfaces would not allow me to be comfortable. I’d much rather spend for the Craftsman, which is beautiful, classic and charming. But I understand that it’s more important for some folks to display their wealth rather than simply enjoy it.
Rupert Murdoch Paid $28.8MM For Vineyard Property in Bel Air
@guest #8: Yea I was thinking the same. The Ultra Elite want to live in the best places in the world and Los Angeles weather and amenities can’t be beat. You can live in French mansion or the Hamptons, or other foreign nation etc but they are only nice weather for 3-6 months. Either too cold or too hot, L.A. is perfect almost year round. Plus we have culture, celebrities, entertainment, huge business and technology class of people, and tons of other high net worth folks in different industries. It’s the only place in the world with so many Grand Estates set on an acre or more. There is decent number and market demand form Brentwood Hills, Bel Air, Homlby Hills, to Beverly Hills for large estates. No were else in the world are there this many estates of these sizes to select from.

@guest #15: WEDDING : Palmer N. Murray Weds Stephanie A. Booth
June 21, 1991
Stephanie Alice Booth and Palmer Neville Murray exchanged marriage vows Saturday evening at All Saints Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills. A reception followed at Los Angeles Country Club.
The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Otis Booth Jr. of Bel-Air, was graduated from Marlborough School and from USC where she was affiliated with Kappa Alpha Theta. She is the great great-granddaughter of General Harrison Gray Otis, first editor of the Los Angeles Times and founder of the Times Mirror Co. in 1884.
Huge 1913 Estate in Pas Hits Market For First Time in 90 Years
Guest 43 and 44 are idiots. First of all anyone who spends millions of dollars in a city because they think the city is "cool" is a moron. I can guarantee you many of the Wasps in Pasadena/San Marino didn’t buy there because they think those cities are cool. Secondly, Asians are buying up the west side too. A lot of big cash buyers and many are Asians are buying in Beverly Hills/Bel Air. All of you act as if the Asians are so bad and so dumb. Just look at San Marino. A lot of Asians are living there and they’re no McMansions there, and the schools are actually doing better. San Marino still remains one of the few cities bustling with pedigree and period homes and they’re statices showing the Asians outperform their white counterparts in schools. Stop being so racist and xenophobic.
Turns Out Trousdale's Endangered Elvis House Was Designed By Rex Lotery, Whose Work is Protected
If that is a Lottery then it’s one of the worst of his designs. I frankly don’t see any of his signatures here, his name may be on the permit but that does not mean his design was actually built. Morton has the clout and muscle to challenge this new ordinance. Not that Im in favor of that, a lot depends on enforcement. this ordinance may not have any teeth and no precedent has been established. And as no. 4 notes, it could " disappear" one Saturday morning…
To my eyes it’s one of the many poor copy cat designs by the master of Regency – John Elgin Wooff, which pollute(d) the wealthy enclaves of Bel Air and Beverly Hills.
