$11 Million Chopped Off Price of Bob Hope's Exquisite Toluca Lake Estate in Quest For First Buyer Ever
@rr22: Doc, the lockdown on commenting on other articles may be no accident. Notice the most recent (Bianca’s finest) regards the design of the Bradbury Building. It’s as if her sources are still waiting for the return of Aimee Semple McPherson. Either that, or they’ve been up to The Watch Tower altogether too many times. They KNOW that primary sources of information regarding the design of the Bradbury paint a picture wherein, after being approached by nascent architectural writer Esther McCoy, Ray Bradbury got together with his best boyhood buddy (as well as first press agent) who also happened to be the grandson of architect George Wyman and with their shared interest in the occult and harem scarem, they cooked up the weird legend that ‘Two Planchettes’ have fed to Bianca and then roped in George’s mother and his aunt. With that, The Unreal McCoy, seeking to remain in the graces of the already famous science fictionalist, said to herself: "why not?" and produced a story for the September 1953 edition of Arts and Architecture based solely on the weird concontion. Esther had had a history of pursuing famous writers of fiction. She said to historian Tom Owen that she had approached THEM seeking information. And the mother, the aunt, bug-eyed George Wyman and Ray Bradbury put one over on L.A. history. Neither Bradbury or his buddy ever responded to my queries.
Only in L.A. could such a pile of malarkey repeatedly be given credence for so long. Would the same lunacy be credited to the oldest and greatest commercial building still standing in San Francisco or New York? No way. Would this be allowed in connection with any of Louis Sullivan’s commercial buildings in Chicago?
Primary sources of information reveal that it was architect Sumner Hunt who designed the masterpiece at Third and Broadway and that Wyman only supervised the building’s construction. In her article for A&A, McCoy alleged that in the wake of completing the Bradbury, that Wyman never again was involved in producing a structure worthy of being called architecture. THAT is a pile of hooey with a summit so high that even The Planchettes could/will not admit to seeing.
What Does Starchitect Thom Mayne Have Planned For the Site of Ray Bradbury's Old House?
You gotta wonder if Ray had any input into the design of the ordinary house that he inhabited for half a century, if he ever imagined living in some other abode, one reflecting the future rather than the past (or the Victorian past rather than the future – judging by his personal stationery). And on the other hand, consider the home that Charles Lummis built for himself (with Sumner Hunt’s help) in the Arroyo Seco. That structure is sui generis, remains as the pure embodiment of the individual that Lummis was.
Dodger Stadium is Having a Skunk Invasion This Summer
@guest #14: Skunks are native to the entire region. They are actually phenomenally beneficial in terms of eradicating pests including all kinds of insects and rodents including mice, moles, voles, gophers, rats, etc. We did in fact have skunks back in the 70’s, and earlier. They do have natural enemies (besides humans) – coyotes, wolves, mountain lions, bears, feral dogs, etc. will all hunt or attempt to hunt them. The smart(er) ones will avoid them or have a good chance of getting sprayed. They are wonderful, intelligent creatures.
Year in Review, Transportation Awards: Measure R, Dodger Stadium Gondola!
traffic hero? awesome.. so when i’m stuck in traffic 10 years from now when our sales taxes are up to 15%, i’ll know who to hunt down…in addition to the deluded curbed readers who voted for it, that is.
It’s probably a real triplex otherise it’s unpermited work and will be closed down by city they are on the hunt these days. If the neighbors are upset all they have to do is turn these people in, it’s easy.
Massive, Lavish Montecito Estate With Secret Pub Asks $125MM
Beautifully proportioned rooms, elegantly understated ornament, historical artworks hanging on the walls (including an eighteenth-century portrait and a fox hunt scene), and nary a flat-screen television—who knew it was still possible to be wealthy and tasteful? What a refreshing break from the stucco-and-granite McCastles of the vapid nouveaux riches…
@Joshua: I hope Jerry Rubin doesn’t hunt you down. I don’t know why you would even JOKE about cutting down a tree. (You’re better off just putting a little industrial round-up around some inconspicuous slits cut down close to the roots.) Just Kidding, Jerry!
Curbed Contest: Your Worst-Looking Room Wins Dwell Exhibition Tickets
Dwell is modern design porn while arch digest is all interiors., mostly old lady fru-fru or english countryside clubby fox hunt paisley… not that intersting (to me anyway).
Modernisn is an intersting read, and Atomic Ranch is true arch porn for that particular subset (like American Bungalow).
