Some Beachwooders Prefer Tourists Not Find the Hollywood Sign*
Having lived in Beachwood Canyon 6 years ago, and now a mere few blocks over, I cannot tell you how many times I have given directions to the Hollywood Sign or actually have instructed the tourists to follow me in my car up to the sign; the best is hiking in neighboring Bronson Canyon, and the tourists plan on hiking up to the sign, with no water, not hiking friendly type shoes – I always tell them to turn around and give them idiot proof directions via car on how to get to the sign (Beachwood Canyon)
The sign is iconic, known throughout most of the world – this is a major attraction; and for those objecting to the signage – shame on you! I imagine the sign was one of the main draws that brought you to Beachwood Canyon – certainly not the aspect of living on top of your neighbor, or constant renovation or construction gridlock on hard to navigate windy streets encouraged you to move there. Yes, I understand and appreciate the proximity to Burbank, etc…
When I first went up to look in Beachwood Canyon, the draw WAS the Hollywood Sign – "oh, look at that how romantic, it’s the hollywood sign, this is soooo cool" blah blah.
Living there is a whole other story; there is constant traffic; there are the tourists; but I gotta say, posting directional signage makes a hell of a lot of sense.
And to those grouches that want the signs down, I am almost inclined to set up a booth on Sat and Sun near the Beachwood Market with a banner offering "Free Directions to Hollywood Sign" in pamplet form. Perhaps I could even get some volunteers to hand them out on Franklin and Beachwood as well. Ah, yes, a plan I like.
Video: Why It's So Hard to Get to the Hollywood Sign
All the evidence you need about the nature of the problem for Beachwood Canyon residents is in this moron’s video when he first gets to Griffithn Park—just look at the traffic and the number of cars parked at the Hollywood Sign Observation point in the park, and then imagine all those same cars driving through and trying to park in your neighborhood, except on even narrower streets. Can we get this idiot’s address so we can drive by his place all day long every day? My guess is eventually he would want some relief as well, even though he isn’t "rich."
Beachwood Canyon is an expensive place to live, but many residents have been here for many years, before it got expensive, and by the way the Sign was essentially gone in the early 70’s, resurrected only by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and God Bless ’em for that. But the fact is that the neighborhood was here long before the Sign became iconic. And until one experiences it on a weekend in the summer, one cannot fully appreciate or even imagine what it can be like on the canyon roads for someone just trying to get home. This is not at all like people who move next door to LAX and then complain about airplane noise.
Finally, the city has tried for years to develop easier and closer access to the Sign within Griffith Park. The volume of traffic created when the Park opened up the remote view point shown in the video was staggering, and the city cannot afford to maintain that particular road so as to handle that volume of traffic. Imagine what the traffic does to the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood roads, never intended to handle such volume? Meanwhile, plenty of tourists are perfectly happy with remote views, as the Griffith Park access experiment and this video make very clear. Literally hundreds of knuckleheads stop way down Beachwood Canyon every day and stand in the middle of that busy street to take photos and then go away happy with their long distance snaps—lucky not to have been run over by those trying to venture closer.
Efforts to restrict access to the Sign via the Beachwood Canyon residential area as opposed to Griffith Park has nothing whatever to do with "inequality." It has everything to do with neighborhood sustainability and public safety. Griffith Park access points provide an entirely reasonable balancing of reasonably competing interests, and we should encourage the city to develop those alternatives while giving Beachwood Canyon residents some peace of mind.
Fresh & Easy Is Going to Lose a Lot of Money This Year
There’s room for F&E. We alternate weekend shopping between TJ’s one weekend and F&E the next. Living in Beachwood Canyon, the TJ’s on Hollywood and Vine will be a welcome addition that will stop me from having to throw elbows with elderly Russian women in WeHo, but I hope there’s still room for F&E in Hollywood.
Which Newly-Built Hills House Should We Visit This Weekend?
@Raid Radkovic: Have you ever been to Beachwood Canyon/Hollywoodland?? Cars have been driving around those hills since the 20s. A Hummer is the last vehicle you would want to take up there.

By the way, I’ve lived in Beachwood Canyon for most of my life. That weird Streamline Moderne element above the doorway didn’t used to be there. That was once a working balcony with a door. Always thought they ruined the building with that, but I guess it could be worse.
New To Market: Easter Explosion in the Hollywood Hills
I love Mt. Washington, but the idea that it’s comparable is absurd. There, you’ve got three restaurants and two museums and one club to choose from within fifteen minutes; in Beachwood Canyon, you’ve got, oh, everything East of Beverly Hills. There are great views in parts of Northridge, too — so what?
Los Felix is more like East Hollywood. Nothing wrong with that but it does come with one of those permitter "security" fences that I hate. Of these Beachwood Canyon is my pick. Mid-Wilshire could be quite nice, but looks dark since photos were taken at night. Need to take during the day to show lots of light coming in.
Is there anything LA residents can do to ensure this doesn’t get developed? Or do we just have to wait and see? Sorry if this sounds naive, but it would be such a shame to see this developed, and as a resident of Beachwood Canyon, I would like to do something…thoughts?
South California Secession Movement, Beachwood Canyon is Loud
Could the Beachwood Canyon douche being any more whiny? Move somewhere that they don’t have streets and sewers if the noise bothers you. Move to where you don’t have neighbors if they bother you. Get a real job where you go to an actual office instead of "freelancing" or running a business out of a RESIDENTIAL community.
Sprawling Entertainment Complex Proposed Around Ford Amphitheatre in the Cahuenga Pass
Just make sure there is an access road up to the Hollywood sign from there too, with a cute Hollywood sign tram or some such, with a ped path and a cyclers path too. Would be better than all the lost souls wandering Beachwood Canyon, having accidents and needing emergency lift outs and such.
