ain was a socialist. some say it cost him an otherwise "glittering" career, although that very much depends on how you judge an architect’s career.
understandably, his designs were mainly for the proletariat and seldom for the bourgeoisie. thus small spaces that even mobile wall panels could never make generous…..

Maybe if Silver Lake had some sort of modernist history it would be more appropriate. Too bad Ain, Shindler, Neutra, or any others never built multi-family housing here.

Tufeld must have been a high quality person to have built, lived in and maintained for almost 60 years such a grand house. It seems to be a bit bigger than I expected an Ain house would be, but just great.

@STARCHY: I remember loving the Ain property when I saw the listing. For me, THIS would be the expected highlight of the MAK tour…except for storming the gates of the Niemeyer Strick/Boyd house with STARCHY!

PS: one of my best friends lives in one of those Altadena Ains; and this is a guy who is Hancock Park traditionalist ALL the way…

@Steven Price: No criticisms? Then you clearly lake a discerning eye and your overall design sensibilities are questionable at best. The "remodelers" really f’ed up this house. No wonder it’s not part of the overall HPOZ overlay – a (dis)honor shared by only 2 other remuddled homes in the larger 52-unit Ain tract.

There is another tract that people don’t seem to know about as much that was built before the one in mar vista. It’s in altadena. Found a cool blog about it, with some vintage pics, if you’re an ain geek. Not sure but think many of the homes may be in rough shape.

if this is typical of cliff may, did anyone check if he was active in the boy scouts in his youth? the spaces here are pure village hall. all they need are some old camping gear in the corner, and the scene would be complete.
as for the contributor who said this architect is one of his favourites, what did neutra, schindler, soriano, ain, or koenig, to name but a few, not fulfil?

true. well where all my neo communist developers at? imagine a series of side by side Dunsmuir Flats!! multifamilty housing was perfected by AIN and i think anyone who is involved in the development of multifamily housing should be forced to reference his ideals in their work. but greed is definitely at the core of this project.
