1949 Gregory Ain in Brentwood Hits the Market For the First Time, Probably as a Teardown
I live in another Ain home built the same year, and would like to refute any claims that this home is not original. The interiors are mirror image of the Mar Vista Tract homes in every detail, down to light fixtures and the stock rear kitchen door, which mostly have been replaced in other Ain homes. This home appear to be completely original. The original owner first asked Eames, who referred the job to Ain. It is a "Big Brother" to the Mar Vista Tract homes as the owner wanted a home like those in Mar Vista, but larger.
It’s beautiful ‘modern’ architecture… it’s hot. It should be saved, especially since what they put there in it’s place (probably a parking lot) won’t be better maid, or better looking….
Starchitect Thom Mayne is Tearing Down Ray Bradbury's Cheviot Hills House Right Now
"Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you’re there.
It doesn’t matter what you do, he said, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that’s like you after you take your hands away. The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching, he said. The lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime."
