Week In Review: Sierra Bonita Apts, Prop 8 Protests, 4900 Hollywood, El Dorado Unveiled, Mixed Use Shipping Containers, Los Feliz Pocket Park
#9, there’s an Op-Ed piece by a black lesbian in this morning’s LAT that makes many of the same points. Having a few meetings in Leimert Park isn’t gonna cut it.
Honestly, though, the fact that so many of my fellow Mormons seem taken by surprise by the protests at the LA Temple (I’m reading lots of "[blank] is shocked and horrified" status updates on Facebook as I sit here in Illinois) is evidence that their BYU "educations" didn’t prepare them for dealing with people who disagree with them, especially the most vocal of minority groups. You’d think that there might have been some awareness on the part of local church leadership that the intersection of Santa Monica and Overland is just about exactly halfway between the major gay population centers of West Hollywood and Santa Monica; of course there were going to be protests.
Pondering Preservation: How Will The Economic Downturn Affect Preservation?
Ed Wood only used the exterior of the Pantages.
The interior that was supposed to be the Pantages in the movie was actually the Tower Theater, downtown. I happened to be roaming around and came upon the set on the day they were shooting that.

The Hollywood Pantages also sat empty for very long stretches before it’s recent makeover. The poor jewel was slumming indeed, I was an extra on ‘Tango and Cash’ in ‘89 when they shot a nightclub scene in it’s lobby. Ed Wood also used it in ‘94. It was a marvel of dilapidated elegance. Thank the stars it’s still with us.
