Be the First to Renovate This Awesome Late-'70s Compound
@Spencer Peterson: We don’t currently know who the architect was, but that doesn’t mean the architect is "unknown." Just not identified by the realtor, who may think this is "Bauhaus" when it’s not, but who can’t be blamed entirely from using the term "Brutalist" either.
A more apt descriptor might be "Classic ’70s Minimalism" and it looks a lot like the work of Horace Gifford, an architect who was a master at deploying these completely cedar-planked buildings within a Brutalist, sculptural massing. So I’d have to say that "renovate" is a poor choice of words and "restore" might be better because in thirty years some graduate student in architectural history is going to come a-knockin’ on the door.
The listing suffers from bad realtor photos, so yes, the impeccably-laid saltillo looks terrible. As for details, the cedar paneling is impeccable and note how in some rooms the sliders go wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-ceiling, a very expensive construction detail that conceals the window opening’s header and framing.
We like to see houses staged and decluttered, and while not all the furniture here is wonderful, all that caramel leather that a commenter complained about is pretty great Modernist stuff– Mies Van Der Rohe’s cantilever MR dining chairs, an Eames lounge, plus chairs and ottomans by Tobio Scarpa. Most of the furniture is probably original to the house– making it a time capsule owned and cared about by someone who appreciated the design of his/her time.

Could LA's Newest Soccer Team Get a Stadium in the Valley?
By Van Nuys Orange Line? Or maybe near Woodley Station, where there is an abundance of space (but the Army Corp of Engineers may mangage the place, I’m not sure)?
