One-Fifth of LA's New Housing in Past 15 Years is in Downtown
The interesting contrast is that commercial and industrial development in downtown LA has slowed to a crawl. The loss of job sites to other parts of the county — West LA, West Valley, Glendale/Burbank/Pasadena, among others — was cited as one of the reasons ridership on Metrolink has declined (since most public transit is designed to get people from the outer communities into a job-intensive core, as in NY and SF). In short, downtown needs to develop commercial and industrial capacity, as well. So much for the jobs-housing balance, which LA has never done very well.

@ocsurfer: YEs, I always thought a change in that black box building into something more complimentary towards Paseo Pasadena and Old Town, a "bridge," if you will, would make sense.
@Mikeday:
Pasadena is very much a touristy space. To the commenter who asked why the big hulabaloo about here and whether it’s a touristy spot, come New Year’s Eve and/or that week. It’s probably the most quaint and charming area in LA County. It has Light Rail access (GOld Line), etc. Also has a Convention Center that has been noted above a block away.

@armchair boogie: I live in Pasadena too and I agree with your Fillmore comments…I’d love to see them get rid of those strip malls. I’m also kinda bummed that the old Sizzler is going to stay car-oriented when it opens as Pitfire Pizza…would’ve been nice to see some mixed-use there.
As for the city as a whole, between the 210 and Del Mar and the 710 and Lake, it’s one of the few 24-hour pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods in the region and it’s only getting better. Woot!

@ocsurfer: Yup, that building is also known as the Death Star. It just kills pedestrian-friendliness between Old Pasadena and the Paseo. Fortunately, the big AT&T building across the street looks ready to get some renovations that will add retail and dining.

What would really help is to somehow better integrate Paseo Colorado and Old Town Pasadena, with some street level retail options on the 150 E Colorado (Black Box) Office Building…
LA Airbnb Landlords Going to Have to Start Paying Their Taxes
@betterthangray: "And how about those NOW allowed to cook and sell food out of their apartments?" — except they are not. By law people must use a certified kitchen like CHEFSSPACE in Pasadena.

I’m not completely familiar with Pasadena (don’t get that way much), but I’m glad to see that old, outdated shopping centers are being renovated for a more pedestrian and mixed-use communities. Bringing life where it’s needed.

I drive by this place often. Currently the street wall along Los Robles Ave. from this Macy building is just that, a wall – devoid of any pedestrian street life. Hopefully all this will change. Also, the Marriott hotel on Fair Oaks just south of the 210 fwy has already broken ground. Along with the Union Village currently under construction Pasadena is becoming a much more walkable city.
