I’ve lived in Sherman Oaks for twenty years. I’m just south of Van Nuys, but I like the easy access to the 101, the quick commute to work (15 minutes to Woodland Hills to arrive by 6:30), and the wider streets in the Valley. No, I don’t like the heat, but there are always trade offs. I’d stay along the 101 corridor, though, because Van Nuys and North Hollywood still aren’t great, as these photos show. I’m not sure why anyone would think that urban blight is something to romanticize; it’s not like you can patronize a business that shut down twenty years ago. I’m always amused by how many people don’t even know that most of the Valley is actually part of the City of Los Angeles. What doesn’t amuse me is how the Valley has been shortchanged on services compared to the taxes we pay. That’s what we should really be talking about and addressing.
I’m a former westsider who wondered why I didn’t come over the hill sooner. Y’all can pay the same rent as my house in the hills for a 1 bedroom dump next to a Carl’s Jr. my question is this: why is this protographer romanticizing urban blight? Those places were nothing special in 1981 and now they make LA look like a third world country. Bulldoze all those dumps!
I know—Beverly Hills’ MO is usually to embezzle a lot of money to block other people’s projects: if this had been BHHS they would’ve spent $10 million dollars working to ban people from owning dogs altogether
As a lifelong dog owner, I don’t think I have seen a municipal dog park anywhere that has restricted which dogs can attend… other than restrictions on aggressive dogs and numbers of dogs you can bring. Leave it to boring Bev Hills to be the first.
I am shocked! How DARE the City of Beverly Hills construct a beautiful dog park for its residents! Didn’t the City realize that by doing so, it would incur the rancor of Curbed LA? And I’ll just BET the Sprinkles cupcakes were only for the residents, too. Unbelievable!
I do not live in Beverly Hills, shop there or pay taxes there. But I SHOULD be able to avail myself of not only this fancy dog park, but the school system and all other City services that are being selfishly hoarded by its residents.
The Valley is the armpit of LA and it will always be I know because I grew up there. It is the classic definition of wanna-be. Everyone who lives in the San Fernando Valley would rather live elsewhere if they could. Yes there are some nice spots, but those nice spots will always be second or third tier when compared to anything south/west of the Hollywood Hills, Ventura Blvd., or 101 …. Excuse me THE 101.
If you are looking for untouched not yet gentrified and not rotting LA, I point you to the South Bay’s Torrance.
