1906 Craftsman in Jefferson Park Historic Zone Asking $399k
Where do you guys get your information? It looks like you just throw out an opinion, any opinion, without knowing anything about what you are talking about.
For the record, I am a broker with an extremely upscale client list. I have sold 3 homes to 3 newly married couples in Jefferson Park in the past year… each couple has families that could well afford to buy them homes anywhere. This neighborhood appeals to people with aesthetics who cherish the history that these homes offer. Also, the prices have risen greatly in the past year and these homes are seen as fabulous investments. Believe me, these couples could live anywhere but have chosen to live in Jefferson Park.
There are charter schools close by that are excellent plus private schools on the westside are easy to get to on the 10.
The neighborhood is safe and there are many professionals living there that are neither low-income or poorly -educated. As for high-density, please spare me. Have you been to Brentwood, Westwood, West Hollywood, Mid-City, etc., lately?
Voicing opinions is great but please refrain from dispensing inaccurate information based on….what? You do not know what you are talking about. Someone may read your comments and actually believe them.
Brentwood's Barry-Building-Killer Retail Project Is Now Dead
Echoing the first comment…….this is, indeed a shame!
I worked on Charlie Munger’s very "unpopular" "Sea Meadow" development in Montecito (yikes close to thirty years ago!)
It is now considered one of the most beautiful developments in the United States!
I feel so sorry for Brentwood! There is another example in Montecito (about the size of Brentwood??)
The Miramar. That property was a run-down motel like the "Barry building" (motel……run down retail….same exact situation) in the middle of a lovely area.
Now 12 years later………FINALLY we made Rick Caruso tear down the nightmare , rat-infested, cottages.
Good luck; Brentwood. You have made a terrible and stupid mistake!!! Just my opinion! This building is in the "tear down pile"!! It used to work…….it doesn’t any more.
Now it will just deteriorate in your community……and you will be very sorry!!

@deesee:
Replying to deesee, I too assume the Barry Building drew inspiration from the Villa Savoye.
It’s one of the reasons I find the Barry so compelling. Few might expect 1951 Brentwood to have been a place Le Corbusier’s ideology flourished, but that’s just just what it did by being reinterpreted and re-contextualized for Southern California right here on San Vicente Blvd. Barry Building architect Milton Caughey translated the principles informing a private luxury residential estate (Villa Savoye) to accommodate the needs of a commercial building and ennoble the lives of…shoppers.
The Barry Building is a machine – not for living, but for community and commerce. It used new materials and technology, and emphasized simplicity and clarity of form, an open-plan interior, and the absence of clutter…all this with the added qualities of being sensitive to both "its" environment and to "the" environment. Modernism for everyday people in sunny Southern California. That’s why I love the Barry Building.

@CharliePeligro: They just opened up a new rag & bone in brentwood. There’s hardly any retail there and that’s what people prefer. You don’t need to shop on san vicente just because you live in brentwood.

Respectfully, to those who believe this would have been a great project for Brentwood, not everyone agrees that the downside (destruction of a landmark structure, additional traffic along one of the busiest corridors on the westside, impacts to local residential neighbors) would have been worth the upside (new retail, one or two new restaurants). Those opposed to GHS are not all in the "rich NIMBY" category. That is a convenient and frequently applied label, but its use usually indicates a very shallow level of analysis. In fact, I spoke with many people opposed to GHS and never met a single one opposed to all development at the site.
Like Josh S, I also heard Mr. Munger speak, and I don’t doubt that his vision for the property was borne of a genuine desire to create a beautiful project to serve the community. I wish him well, and hope that a new vision for the property incorporating a revitalized Barry Building will take shape.

brentwood like westwood are the antithesis of where the rest of LA are going … they are very much 1950s LA …filled with stumpy condo/rental buildings some nice homes…and totally car dependent

This is a shame. I heard Munger speak, and he was anything but the stereotypical "greedy" developer (which usually isn’t true anyway). He liked this project and he genuinely believed that it would be an asset to the neighborhood. Why else would a 90-year old billionaire bother with that sort of thing? He doesn’t need the money. He wanted to do something nice for the neighborhood. And it would have been nice. But a few squaky neighbors, who are out of touch with the rest of the community convinced spineless public officials — first CM Rosendahl and now CM Bonin — to buy into the lame historic preservation argument.
Brentwood doesn’t have to be the next Arts District. But it shouldn’t be a cemetery either.

I feel Brentwood actually needed this, they have so few retail and lesser food selection compared to other parts of the city now. It’s also hard to drive to far because of the freeway and traffic issues they need something close like this.
