"PIANO: Of course we repeat; we repeat what we like! It’s not because we are lazy people; it’s not because we want to repeat ourselves."
As much as I’d like to give Renzo Piano the benefit of the doubt, he’s built the same building too many times now. The Nasher Sculpture Center (Dallas), the Modern Wing of the Chicago Art Institute, the High Museum expansion (Atlanta), and the Morgan Library (New York) are all essentially copies of his most noted museum commission, the Menil Collection in Houston. He’s really become a one-trick pony where museums are concerned – white/beige/glass box, long galleries, overhead skylights, lather, rinse, repeat. Take away the grass roof, and even his California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco) is another oblong box o’ skylights; he’s also worn out that piazza metaphor with many of these projects.
Piano has created in some intriguing designs for corporate commissions (Vulcano Buono, Weltstadthaus) and European institutions (Zentrum Paul Klee, the Padre Pio church), but he keeps knocking out these self-plagiarizing white boxes with skylights for American museums. Unlike, say, Richard Meier, who seems to be incapable of designing with anything by white paint and a straght-edge, Piano has proven he can do better work – he apparently just doesn’t want to.
Piano’s building an addition for the museum that inspired the Menil Collection, the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth. You’ll never guess what he’s building for them: A white box with skylights.

Billionaire Carlos Slim Unloads 9900 Wilshire Site in Beverly Hills*
Carlos Slim lost about $200 million on this. He was carrying a $387 million note that the Candy’s defaulted on.
Yes – Waldorf is dead.
Shame about the old Robinson’s being torn down. Many don’t know it was designed by Paul Williams.
Paul Williams-Designed in Silver Lake's Moreno Highlands
IF you could see an original Paul Wms house, you would see how many beautiful and functional details were obliterated in this bland, 1990s erasure. So sad.
Paul Williams-Designed in Silver Lake's Moreno Highlands
I stayed at a magnificent Paul Williams house 20 years ago, the Fred Price house, which Williams has said was one of his favorites. It’s a Mediterranean in Pacific Palisades. The owners LOVED this house and meticulously restored it, keeping all the amazing Malibu tile in the bathrooms, the hidden bar in the den, and, AN INDOORPOOL, on a beautiful lot overlooking the ocean. This particular house became my "gold standard." I’ve been in bigger and grander, but this house was so well designed, constructed and appointed that everything else pales in comparison.
Ripping out all the original tile and replacing every fixture with restoration hardware is a disgrace to paul williams. These people don’t belong restoring homes, they belong in Orange County in a McMansion.
Paul Williams-Designed in Silver Lake's Moreno Highlands
Lovely home on the BEST street in prime Silver Lake….BUT it looks like the bathrooms and kitchens have been sadly "updated." I am certain those rooms would have been much more lovely and gracious when designed by Paul Williams. Now they are generic at best. GENERIC.
Anyone who knows the work of Paul Williams and is going to pay the premium to want one of his works is going to want original tile and such as he had such a lovely and deft touch with the little details. It is where he would truly sing as an architect.
If the original bathrooms were indeed pulled out instead of restored as I suspect they were I would think $500,000 should be taken off of the asking price.
