Beverly Hills Losing Cred to Brentwood, Creating 90210 Credit Card
@haters. Never said capitalism preserves beauty. Not even close. What it does is satisfies the wants and needs of society at that given moment – good, bad or ugly. Ugly Strip centers? Yes, because that is what people want. They are not willing to pay more for a bag of widgets or a cup of soup from a historically significant building than from a common strip mall. But if they were – then those great buildings would still be around. I didn’t invent capitalism, but am just stating the obvious. And lowest common denominator?? I would call it instead the will of the people tallied through their pocketbooks. If you want to save a building, then buy it. Or at least pay market rent to lease space in one of those obsolete death traps. No lecturing here. Just calling out the market reality of real estate in our best-in-the-world society. Although some of our greatness is eroding away when we forget where we came from any why we are the envy of the world. And finally – I welcome any advice on dry-fit workout gear. I prefer under armor and vibram five finger shoes, but I always welcome the latest and greatest.

Ridiculous article. Celebs are going to Bel~Air, Holmby Hills and Brentwood because you can get privacy and an estate with a wall and a gate. MOST (but not all) of the flats of Beverly Hills can not provide such amenities in an increasing aggressive paparazzi & star-tours world. And if the old buildings had such great worth – they would still be around. And if preservationists want to keep any particular building — then BUY it!! That is the capitalist system that made us who we are and made Beverly Hills the bastion of wealth that it is. Turning our collective backs on that ideology is laughable hypocracy.

@Chris Hamilton: "And if the old buildings had such great worth – they would still be around." – because the lowest common denominator ALWAYS equals art? hows about we (that would be you) let the people who know architecture weigh in with some perspective and learned opinion on what society considers an important issue? I wouldn’t begin to lecture you how to jog on the beach or what sleeveless dry-fit shirt to buy, so why do you feel compelled to lecture us about historic or significant buildings?

@Chris Hamilton: Yes, the invisible hand of capitalism always preserves beautiful buildings and never produces crap. Just look at all the gorgeous strip malls throughout our fair city!
I read the Times article, that quote is suppose to be him explaining when West Angeles church builds a skywalk to a proposed banquet hall that spans over the Expo Line tracks the sense of grandiose entering the Crenshaw Station.
Can Nicer Sidewalks and Cleaner Buildings Perk Up Westwood Village?
@westwoodnc: Regardless of the chicken / egg conundrum, the problem NOW – regardless of its impetus – is the Homeless. Today walking down Broxton to Yogurtland – I encountered four of our town’s regulars. (1) Sing-begging guitar guy outside Stan’s, (2) Heavyset man with gangrenous legs on the Chipotle bench, (3) Screaming foreign language constantly walking dude (Portuguese?), and (4) the iconic crazy haired-gray bearded dusty fellow with a rope belt. Four in two blocks. And there are many more recognizable faces that were elsewhere in Westwood. There is NO DOUBT these people need help from our city and society – and deserve a place to live and assistance re-entering society. But if we are having an honest debate, it is this issue more than any other that keeps people away from the Village.
