Boston 2025: The most noticeable ways the region’s landscape will change by then
What about Air Rights development over the Turnpike? There is 3 projects in the pipe line and more Air Rights can be developed . Many cities are developing over highways .
MTA to build new Metro-North stations linking Bronx to Penn Station
Hard to disagree with common sense and the need for a viable LGA connection via the subway system, not another moneypit air train designed to waste piles of money and line pockets. But I have a bigger agenda – we need to spend whatever it takes to directly connect Long Island and LIRR to north of the city via Metro North (not just via the many years away ESA), but we should be able to change trains, perhaps at Sunnyside or Jamaica, to trains to West Chester (including White Plains) and Ct. No, it won’t be cheap. But lots of us on Long Island are either losing out on jobs north of the city, or like me, stand to lose their job which is moving north – without me. Sure, one of these decades ESA may actually go into service, but that will still make for a long, expensive commute. We need a good service via LIRR and MN.
Harry Macklowe’s proposed Midtown supertall would rise 1,551 feet
Office mechanics and custodians would know their way around getting to the top floor to observe their bosses floating in the air across the neighborhoods.
Report: Atlanta rent increases outpaced most of the country last year
Back in the day as in 2012? I think the narrative of student loan debt and stagnant wages was very well entrenched by 2012. I’m a little older than the Millennial age bracket and already was conscious of this narrative by the time I graduated from college. To get back to the day when it wasn’t in the air, you’d probably have to put Millennials back into junior high at least.
As Boise booms, a city faces the curse of ‘Californiacation’
While affordable housing will always be an issue in revitalized cities, the growth and improvements are exciting. I watched it happen to Seattle, Portland and Reno and I’m looking forward to watching Boise develop it’s own identity as a city. Anchorage will no doubt be the next city in line, we’ve got clean air, water, an increasingly vibrant downtown with micro breweries, art galleries and new residential developments taking place. If you’re kicking yourself for missing out on investing in a home in Boise, check out Anchorage.
Harry Macklowe plans supertall tower in Midtown East
Tower Fifth will continue to redefine the New York City skyline which has seen tremendous change over the past seven years. It started with One57 and 432 Park Avenue. Soon, they will be joined by One Vanderbilt, 111 West 57th Street, Central Park Tower and Tower Fifth. Each of these new towers will soar more than 1,400 feet in the air. Most importantly, these towers speak to New York City’s ability to remain a world class city where people want to live, visit, work and enjoy!
The myth of ‘We don’t build houses like we used to’
As a home inspector, I’ve got to see many types of housing, built for many different economic demographics, over the last 125 years or so. Some building systems have improved, while some are not an improvement, but have taken hold due to cost savings.
Heating systems, plumbing, electrical, and insulation… greatly improved, if done right.
Windows… greatly improved, with the ability to replicate pretty much any aesthetic, other than stained glass.
Toxicity… while we don’t use asbestos or lead paint anymore, most indoor air quality is pretty poor due to other modern contaminants, unless a house has a heat recovery ventilator.
Drywall vs. plaster… I’ll take plaster, as it’s less prone to mold.
Roof systems… a slate roof, properly maintained, can last 150 years or more. A metal roof from the past could last 100 years or more. Asphalt roofing, though much cheaper per install, will last 20 -2 5 years, on average.
Nothing is really no-maintenance, but there are plenty of low-maintenance products around. Hardie Board siding (pretty much indestructible and color-fast), quartz counters, and good quality metal roof systems come to mind.
In my humble opinion, the best working/middle class housing, in terms of solidity and craftmanship, was built between the mid-30’s and late 50’s. The worst was built either before the mid-30’s, or from the early 80’s through the early 2000’s.
Earthquake faults crisscross LA. Is it safe to tunnel here?
I’d be nervous some water supply line would rupture and flood the tunnel with a ton of water. that can’t be good for a Tesla. I can picture people treading water as the air pockets get smaller and smaller.
