First Time in 4 Decades For Upper Unit in Ain's Avenel Coop
ain was a socialist. some say it cost him an otherwise "glittering" career, although that very much depends on how you judge an architect’s career.
understandably, his designs were mainly for the proletariat and seldom for the bourgeoisie. thus small spaces that even mobile wall panels could never make generous…..

It’s a modern day improved version of Neutra/Ain/Soriano. If they were alive today I’m sure they’d be spitting this out too. Hey skinny jean posers, you’re now old enough to see that nothing is sacred, even your silly strip of dirty hippy stores. Move to Highland Park where you’ll have at least a year or two of grubby storefronts before things like this become developed and by that time you’ll be in your BMW 3 series just like everyone else. Youth is fleeting!

I love it. Architecturally, it’s more "Silverlake" than most of you realize, very much what Neutra/Ain/Soriano would have built if they could, and a reference to the building (and aspirations) of the neighborhood in the last century.
To those of you arguing about parking, having a car does not mean using it all the time or to get to work, but a garage is a place to store it. Seriously, it’s also obvious none of you have children.

@glitzy bernini: You need to lay off the helium, honey! Getting all excited over this crap and comparing it with Neutra/Ain/Soriano’s works? You are insane! What an insult!

There is no creativity in this, looks totalitarian McLofts. You are squeezing it hard to call this Neutra/Ain/Soriano. They were pioneers of the form, this is dumbed down cheap cinder block boxes. What they did was rule breaking and forward thinking, not this.
Doesn’t this make anyone else sick that the charm of Silverlake is being snuffed out. Isn’t bad enough Hollywood has been raped and pillaged of its heritage. Just another episode for "Things that Aren’t Here Anymore"

And Starchy will appreciate this: the house next door (the former Gregory Pack estate) that was torn down and the land annexed into this parcel was the ‘Party House’ from the movie "Shampoo" (at the end, where Goldie Hawn freaks out at finding Warren Beatty boinking Julie Christie by the tennis court).

Beverly Hills Finally Working on Preserving Its Historic Buildings
A couple of things:
1. Lautner isn’t my favorite. He seems to fill the gap between Wright and the following MCM architects and not so well…Koenig is my favorite followed by Ain…but as far as Lautner goes, I like this one.
2. No one is stepping up to the plate…where’s La Fetra…so maybe this house’s time has come…and gone. Just so as not to add insult, hopefully a faux monstrosity won’t be built in replacement.
3. As numbers one and two allude, I don’t have much hope or huge interest it will be saved. But maybe the silver lining in all of this is that Beverly Hills will finally develop a preservation department.
@ effron: yeah no freeway, but that’s cutting both ways…no subway.
