New To Market: Claude Oakland-Designed Eichler in Granada Hills
With all due respect to the Colonel, Mayor Villargosossa has done a fantastic job of meeting the needs of Balboa Highlands residents by declaring Balboa Blvd. and anti-gridlock zone and his aides have supported HPOZ status for the hood. It does seem however that there is a certain amount of "gay flight" from Granada Hills. Wonder what that’s all about?

This is really not the best example of Schindler’s work. Truly bare bones. It appears as if the owners just moved in and didn’t touch a thing. Perhaps they might have improved on the quality of the interiors. Were are pictures of the bathrooms? How do these people live in such tight quarters? Are they THAT thin? And what’s with all the sad Green and Green stuff? Doesn’t really suit the aesthetic. Finally, why is the house so poorly sited on the lot?
Don’t get me wrong…I love Lorcan O’Herilihy’s work…as far as it being that time of the month, I predict it is…we just got through the Schindler period on Curbed, now we’re about to move into the L/O phase.
Well, Silver Lake is quite an architectural destination when it comes to residences designed by great architects or architects of merit:
Theres the Howe House, Van Patten House, Droste Residence, Falke Apartments and Bubeshko Apartments, all designed by R.M. Schindler, not to mention his own house in Silver Lake.
Then there’s Neutra Place, a cluster of homes designed by Richard Neutra, the Canfield-Moreno Estate, designed by Robert D. Farquar, John Lautner’s personal residence and the Lautner designed "Silvertop"
Last but not least, there’s the Lexan-MacCarty Residence, designed by Lorcan O’Herlihy.
Do any of these ring a bell Lady of the Lake?

It’s funny how time and real estate agents can change ( or try to change) reality. My Grandpa did not have "substantially more money" than other Schindler patrons. The materials used reflect the idea that simple materials can be used in an elegant and minimal way. Douglas Fir, and DF plywood, were and continue to be some of the most inexpensive decorative wood on the market. Santa Maria stone is quarried not too far from LA, and the copper work was done for Jose and June (Jose’s wife) by June’s sister Margaret, an artist. Modern does not have to mean expensive, and that is the lesson Schindler was trying to teach. Of course, when you are trying to sell an upscale house to an upscale client, the last thing they want to hear is that the materials are common. I could have, and maybe should have, bought this house in 1997 when it listed for around $650,000 and brought it back into the family; it was a scary financial stretch at the time… so inspiring to see it when it was listed then. They had sold it before I was born!

Some of the kitchen cabinets are original Schindler, others are reproductions—he floated a semi transparent stain with some white pigment over the douglas fir. And the entry hall steps are Santa Maria stone, not saltillo tile, the photograph is deceptive. This is an amazing house, we got to see it on a tour a year ago when the Gamble House had it open after a Schindler lecture. Awesome place…

Okay, the kitchen is a little ‘Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ lookin, but the rest…pretty freakin sublime. For $4500 — and 3 bedrooms as opposed to 2 — is this a better deal than the Schindler Buck House?
I know what WE’LL be discussing over dinner tonight at Mr. Peejja Factory!
