Poll: Which Detroit location would be the best fit for Amazon HQ2?
So here goes, and I know I’m late to the game. Ultimate fantasy; Dan Gilbert, as head of the new commission to bring in Amazon, should propose the world’s future tallest building (I’m thinking around 3,500 ft) on some vacant plot downtown, call it Amazon Tower. One headquarters building for all 50,000 people and certainly a game changer for Detroit.

Say what you want about Dan Gilbert, but every time he buys a historically significant property, he restores it to its’ original grandeur. In this instance, he could have easily argued the demolition of this small and often overlooked structure; but he didn’t and the architecturally significant elements are being incorporated in the proposed parking deck. Dan truly understands what makes cities great. I hope that some of this rubs off on the Illitches.

Pittsburgh has a real shot at the 2nd Amazon HQ, for these reasons. Detroit may have an outside shot (though it’s not on this list)… Dan Gilbert can be very persuasive!

I agree… I doubt that this is the final rendering. Gilbert is spending a ton of money, and has a sizeable ego re: getting it right (which he generally does). This will likely be the development which he’ll be remembered for, if we’re still around in a hundred years. I have a feeling that most of us will be pleased with the final product.

google "Absolute World Towers"
What Gilbert is presenting is just an ordinary building, not a centerpiece of a supposedly architecturally significant city. It’s the same as driving a Camry VS a Cadillac. Both get you there.. but only one adds to your prestige.
Should Amazon choose Detroit for its new headquarters?
Silly that other cities are contacting Amazon already when the RFP is pretty clear on the process. I don’t think I would be attracted to cities with such poor judgment in terms of what the process is.
Back to RFP – maybe Gilbert can offer mortgage incentives as well
Open thread: Could Chicago actually land Amazon’s second HQ?
Don’t count Detroit out. There’s plenty of space and tons of affordable, really affordable housing (good bones in need of TLC, that’s all) that could be a serious lure for young techies and those newly married who want to sink roots. Dan Gilbert is no fool and had/has the same vision as Jeff Bezos.
