Gorgeous Georgian Revival time capsule by Paul Williams in Holmby Hills asking $7M

While it’s true that money can’t buy you class, it can buy you a very classy house. One prime example: this Georgian Colonial Revival time capsule in Holmby Hills designed by Paul R. Williams in 1938.

On the market for the first time in 64 years, the home was commissioned by Marrie Shuwarger, a Russian-born maker of womenswear, for himself and his family. During the 1940s, it was owned by Ronald Reagan and Oscar-winning actress Jane Wyman, who continued to live there after the couple’s divorce in 1949.

Last year, the property logged another claim to fame when it played the role, or at least its exterior did, of Joan Crawford’s Brentwood mansion in FX’s hit miniseries Feud. Its selection for the part is certainly understandable, given the high visual impact of the home’s front entry, with its semi-circular driveway, sculpted hedges, swans-neck pediment and deep oval windows.

Past the front door, more drama awaits in the form of an oval foyer featuring parquet wood floors and a grand, curving staircase accented with a theatrical wrought iron railing.

On the 6,153-square-foot home’s ground floor, you’ll find a reception hall, sun room, living room, formal dining room, kitchen, and wood-paneled family room, complete with wet-bar.

There are four bedrooms upstairs, including the giant master suite, which, per the listing, “comprises the entire southern side of the second floor.” Notable features throughout include high ceilings, crown moldings, wainscoting, French doors, and casement windows.

The .41-acre grounds contain formal gardens, a swimming pool, and a dining pavilion with outdoor fireplace.

Asking price is an even $7 million. Open house is scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

This is old school Hollywood Glamour.

Exactly, I can actually picture someone like Joan Crawford living in a house like this although some of the decor makes me dizzy

I completely agree. Wouldn’t change a thing.

totally not my style, but would not change anything!

Well, I’d certainly change the interior decorating! Good god, all of that drapery and matching wallpaper – including in the bathroom – my eyes!

Other than that, it’s legit classic Hollywood glamor. Which is why it’ll be torn down or gutted. I’d do a light remodel and a full new landscaping of the front and back.

This is exactly what’s going to happen to it, because other then the OTT decor there really isn’t anything extraordinary about the house and at 7 million plus whatever it cost to update/replace someone will be looking for something much more interesting then this
I got to thinking where I’d seen that entry foyer before…

… yep, it’s the Clampett’s entry foyer

OMG. Is that Jethro?

… and Jed

Nice house, but not my taste in decor. That green room…WOOF.

This is a classic house in one of old-Hollywood’s preferred styles. I hope the land under it isn’t more valuable than the house. Pity it isn’t landmarked, if it is. Don’t like the way the pool blocks the sightlines to the pergola at the back of the property. It cramps the backyard making it less of an outdoor room. If this is ‘Georgian Revivial’ what is ‘LA Regency’? Don’t associate the long line of the house with Georgian style.

I’d think about changing the pool boy. He’s probably a pool daddy by now..!

Yep. Buy this house and you got kleas allright. Kleas, kleas, kleas. Comin’ out ya eas.

Great bones, ought to be protected! If not redecorated.
Nice little project for Moby!

I like it! I can vision there were standard size poodles with pedicures done by the side of the former owner.
