Mapping the Sunset Strip's Hotel Madness

View as Map

To say that the once-dangerous, sorta-scuzzy Sunset Strip's changed would be an understatement. The short stretch of Sunset in WeHo is in demand, especially for those who are looking to put a hotel up. The area's experiencing a record number of new projects, says Bloomberg, and there sure are a lot of them hotels. (Maybe that has to do with the fact that WeHo had one of the highest hotel occupancies in LA County last year?) These five hotels are in various stages of the getting-built process—some are in the works now, others are just rumored— but they all reflect a big change to the Strip. Just look at what they'll be taking out.

This project was proposed back in 2010, but then went silent. Now, it's back and developers Combined Properties Inc. have teamed with AECOM. 149 hotel rooms, 40 condos, five rental units and an "entertainment venue"are in the works for this site. Construction's supposed to start in late 2015, and wrap about two-and-half years after that.

8950 Sunset has been waiting a long time for its hotel (at one point, a James hotel was headed this way), but recent movement on the project makes it seem like things are actually moving forward. The 165-room hotel will have four residences, a rooftop deck, and space for a restaurant.

The Sunset|La Cienega mega-project will have, among other things, a chic James Hotel. When it's finished, the hotel will have two 10-story towers, 286 rooms, two restaurants, bars in the lobby and on the roof, and 10,000 square feet of meeting space. The hotel's expected to open in 2016.
