Mapping the Out-of-Control Hotel Boom About to Hit Hollywood

View as Map

Lately it seems like we're hearing about a new hotel on the way in Hollywood at least once an hour. A decade ago, tourists didn't even want to stay in the neighborhood past dark, but now here it is with hundreds and hundreds of hotel rooms in the works, mostly in entirely new buildings (some of which will be pretty tall). Boutiques, giant mixed-users, "European-style" hotels, luxury extended-stays, and "urban kibbutzes," oh my—did you think the Sunset Strip hotel boom was crazy? It's got nothing on Hollywood.

Mama Shelter

The tiny and very hip French chain will be opening its first US outpost, with 76 rooms, in early 2015. Design is by Philippe Starck and the feel is either "urban kibbutz" or baby Château Marmont.

Dream Hollywood

Dream Hotels is working on its first West Coast outpost on Selma right now; it'll have 182 rooms and design by Killefer Flammang.

Hotel Argyle

Kimpton Hotels helped revive a long-languishing plan for a 16-story tower at Argyle and Hollywood and plans on a hotel with 225 rooms, restaurant space, and lots and lots of parking. It's unclear if this Coe Architecture rendering represents the current design.

Vine Inn & Suites

The non-beloved old Vagabond Inn is set to be replaced with a six-story hotel with 112 rooms, a cafe, and a pool.

1525 Cahuenga

Across the street from Space 15 Twenty, there are plans for a 55-room hotel with a rooftop pool and bar, plus a restaurant.

5600 Hollywood

Aterlier V is designing this six-story "European-style" boutique, which is set to have 80 rooms, a restaurant, a rooftop bar and deck, and a second-level courtyard with lap pool. Work isn't expected to start until at least mid-2016, though.

Jack in the Box site

The out-of-place Jack in the Box drive-through at Sunset and Cahuenga has just sold to a company known for developing Marriotts and odds look good they'll want to put up a hotel on the site. Unfortunately, Jack in the Box still has a lease through 2019.

Millennium Hollywood

Ok, so the 35- and 39-story towers of Millennium Hollywood may sit on an active fault, but assuming the developers rearrange the plans enough for them to be built, they'll have a hotel with an observation deck on top, along with residential units, retail space, restaurants, offices, and a sports club.

Academy Square

The massive, block-sized Academy Square campus will have creative office space, retail and restaurants, and a 23-story tower that could possibly have up to 100 hotel rooms (if it doesn't go purely residential).

Villa Carlotta

The legendary Villa Carlotta is being "repositioned" as an extended-stay luxury hotel with a rooftop lounge and "a number" of furnished units catering to traveling entertainment types.
