New hotel construction slowed to a crawl during the recession, but the industry is roaring back in a huge way. Things are hopping by the beach, with new construction and a couple of controversial redevelopments proposed, and just nuts Downtown--from South Park to the Historic Core. Even two long-stalled West Hollywood projects (from the '90s!) have shown signs of life this spring. All together there are a couple thousand new hotel rooms set to open in the next couple years, including 900 alone at the crazy tall Wilshire Grand. Here, now, we've mapped it all. Update 2:56 pm: the Downtown Palihouse is a big, fat lie. It's been removed from the map. Update 6/28: Downtown's Ace Hotel isn't delayed after all. A rep got in touch to say it's due to open by the end of the year.

Mapping Los Angeles's 21 Hotels Under Development Right Now

Hotel Clark
The Hotel Clark has been beset by delays and is currently in a tussle with a union over its liquor license. When it does eventually open (November is the current estimate), it will have 347 rooms
Ace Hotel
The Ace's 182 rooms are due to start Bringing Back Broadway from the old United Artists Theater building by the end of the year.
Marriott Courtyard and Marriott Residence Inn
Due to open in August 2014, the two hotels will have 374 rooms between them.
Renaissance Hotel at LA Live
Georgia Street is turning into Marriott Alley. In addition to the Courtyard/Residence Inn across the street, this Renaissance will bring 450 more rooms when it opens in 2016.
Wilshire Grand
The Wilshire Grand will be the West Coast's tallest tower and have 900 hotel rooms when it's finished. Which won't be until January 2017.
The Line
The Sydell Group is converting the old Wilshire Hotel in Koreatown. It'll have 385 rooms and is scheduled to open this October.
Empire Hotel
The nine-story historic Trinity Auditorium is in the process of being converted into a 183-room hotel set to open in July 2014
Holiday Inn Express & Suites
This 80-room hotel in the NoHo Arts District is due to open in December 2013.
Shade Hotel
Work finally started on this long-delayed 54-room boutique hotel earlier this year. It's expected to open in May 2014.
Hilton Garden Inn Redondo Beach
One of two hotels slated for an abandoned mini golf site/homeless encampment near the 405. This one will have 147 rooms and open in August 2014.
Residence Inn Redondo Beach
The second of two hotels coming to a former miniature golf site near the 405, this one will have 172 rooms. No word on an opening date.
Residence Inn Pasadena
Come 2015, Pasadena will have a new Residence Inn. This one will have 144 rooms.
Hampton Inn and Suites
Approved in February, this business-class hotel's 88 rooms are due to open in January 2014.
Hilton Garden Inn Burbank
This 210 business hotel in Burbank wants to be pedestrian friendly. Which is good, because plans the approved plans have fewer than the required number of parking spaces.
Sunset|La Cienega
One of two relics from the 1990s on the list, the long-planned, long-delayed hotel/residential/retail development came back to life in May. No word on a final timetable, but it's slated to bring 296 rooms to West Hollywood.
Kimpton Pasadena
One of the newest hotels on our list, Kimpton and Pasadena are in talks for the hotelier to take over the historic and abandoned YWCA building and convert it into a 150-room boutique hotel.
James Hotel
Earlier this year came word that the long-delayed James had a new buyer. The hotel is entitled for six stories with 196 rooms plus for residential units and restaurant space, and has been in the works since 1999. Work has to get underway by October or face a $1 million fine from WeHo.
1629 Griffith Park
Dana Hollister's plans to convert Silver Lake's Pilgrim Church into a 25-room boutique hotel plus bar and restaurant have divided the local neighborhood council and aren't yet approved.
Ocean Avenue Project
This Frank Gehry-designed hotel/condo/museum is still a ways off--it hasn't even been approved yet. As of now it's planned for 22 stories with 125 rooms (plus 22 condos).
Wyndham Santa Monica at the Pier
Not so much a new development as a redevelopment of a sad old former Holiday Inn. Three buildings of descending height have been proposed, and the city council is in a bit of a tizzy over it
Fairmont Miramar Hotel
The renovation plans for the Fairmont Miramar recently mushroomed to include a 21-story tower. Community meetings about the project have gotten heated and all sorts of accusations have been flying around. Who said hotel revamps were dull?
