Insecure, HBO’s hit series about a young professional woman “living, loving, and fucking up,” returns Sunday, August 12 for its third season.
In creator Issa Rae’s words, the show is about regular black millennials. But it’s also a very real depiction of life in LA—especially South Los Angeles, “an area that in classic TV and film has been portrayed as gang-ridden and violent.”
In reality, South LA is “rich with culture and extremely diverse, and it’s something that we wanted to put in the best light,” Rae tells Deadline.
Insecure excels at capturing life in Los Angeles without ever referencing green juice or yoga or aspiring actors (ahem, New York Times). We shop at Rite Aid. We eat from taco trucks. We dump our unwanted couches on the street.
In the show, we get glimpses of Windsor Hills, View Park, Inglewood, Leimert Park, mostly through establishing shots of garden apartments, strip malls, and iconic spots such as Randy’s Donuts and the Forum. Here, we’ve compiled some of the places in a handy map. (If we missed any locations, let us know in the comments.)
We’ve also produced a slew of maps documenting filming locations for some of our other favorite TV shows and movies shot in LA:
- The 'Twin Peaks' Los Angeles filming locations map
- The definitive ‘Feud: Bette and Joan’ filming locations map
- The ultimate 'La La Land' filming locations map
- The ultimate 'Back to the Future' filming locations map
