The apartment building where Issa lives with her boyfriend plays itself IRL. The Dunes is an actual, two-story, 52-unit complex in Inglewood, where a two-bedroom rents for $1,625. Built in 1961, it looks like a lot of Los Angeles apartment buildings: a simple building that wraps around a pool or garden, palm trees out front, a stucco facade, and its name emblazoned on the facade.

We Got Y’all, the nonprofit where Issa works, is headquartered at the offices of the Fernando Pullman Community Arts Center, which offers free arts classes for kids, in Leimert Park Village.

Issa raps and strategically runs into her longtime crush Daniel at Mavericks Flat, a historic music venue in Crenshaw. It used to be known as the “Apollo of the West,” because it was one of the foremost jazz, soul, and rhythm and blues venues in Los Angeles during the 1960s and ’70s.

Issa’s low-key 29th birthday is spent at Merkato Ethiopian Restaurant, one of the dozen or so stores and restaurants that line a one-block stretch of Fairfax in LA’s Little Ethiopia district, part of the Carthay neighborhood.

Issa and Molly brunch at one of the prettiest restaurant settings in Los Angeles, the Commissary, which looks a lot like a green house. Located in the Line Hotel, the restaurant is run by celebrity chef Roy Choi.

After Issa learns Molly, who grew up in LA, had never been to the beach until she was an adult, Issa takes her students to the beachiest beach in all of LA: Santa Monica.

Molly and Issa head to this lovely old turn-of-the-century residence in West Adams for a house party. Officially named the the Auguste R. Marquis Residence, it’s known more casually as the Six Feet Under House. The city landmark was used for establishing shots for the Six Feet Under funeral home.

Molly meets her first date on an exclusive dating website at this brick-clad building. The Carondelet House was built in 1928 and is used for event rentals.

With its tall, cylinder-shaped towers, the glassy, futuristic hotel by architect John Portman is one of the most recognizable buildings in LA. It’s featured prominently in the background when Molly runs into an old friend outside her office in Downtown LA.

Issa and Lawrence come out of a movie then awkwardly look at engagement rings at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, a large shopping mall that’s poised to be redeveloped and expanded as LA’s transit network grows, bringing a subway stop right next to the shops.

To get to Malibu for Kelli’s birthday, Issa and her friends cruise down coastline-hugging Pacific Coast Highway, arguably the most beautiful highway in the U.S. When referring to the iconic highway, don’t make the mistake Molly does by calling it “The PCH.” LA locals use that prefix when referring to freeways, “The 101,” “The 5,” “The 605;” but not before PCH.

Los Angeles is home to a slew of awesome diners; it’s no surprise then that one makes an appearance in Insecure. In the appropriately titled episode “Hella LA,” Issa and Molly swing into Swingers, a retro, late-night spot.
