Location: 2710 Palomino Lane, Las Vegas
Size: 12,138 sq.ft. on 1.66 acres; Price: $19,500,000

Having lived in the home between 2006 and 2008, Hacienda Palomino has an official place in Michael Jackson lore. It was where he lived after returning to the United States from Bahrain, and the scene of drama between Michael and his family -- like the time his brother Randy crashed his car through the home's gates to see Michael. The 7 bedroom, 12 bath Spanish Mediterranean style estate includes an art gallery and per the listing an "[a]dditional 7,394sq.ft.-Medieval Chapel [that] seats 74 guests on two levels." It has since become a mini-shrine to Jackson, and at one point a tour was given to mark the second anniversary of Jackson's death, but the tour guide was wanted by law enforement and a pitbull on the property was shot by Las Vegas police. The Trulia listing includes a disclaimer that the home does not include a pool and it is "Not in the State of Florida, FL." The home was last listed in 2011 for $4.8 million.
· 2710 Palomino Ln, Las Vegas, NV 89107 [Trulia]
· A visit to Michael Jackson's old home, where interloper leads tour and pit bull is shot — for starters [Las Vegas Sun]

With the money and tourists flowing south into Mexico, it's not surprising that some of our ideas are going south, too. In this case, Los Angeles architecture and design team RHOM Design has teamed with Oficina de Proyectos Culturales, a Puerto Vallarta non-profit, to install the city's first -- and Mexico's third -- parklet. According to architect Oscar Moran, the parklet is designed to last three months, and at a cost of less than $1,300 to build and install using OSB chip panels, the temporary aspect of the installation is pretty self-evident. The installation was part of the non-profit's exhibit "Paradise in Process" organized by artist David Birks, which is looking at the rapid urbanization of Puerto Vallarta, primarily fueled by tourist dollars and Americans buying up property in the coastal city.
From the architects: "Initially people did not know what it was and there were a few sotires on the local press criticizing it. People in the neighborhood however have embraced it. It is located across the street from an elementary school. Kids from the school and their mothers use the parklet a lot. During the evenings it is a mix of teenagers and senior citizens that hang out there and see the sunset. Twice it has been hit by reckless cars trying to force-park in a small area not adequate to park next to the parklet. On both instances neighbors have reported the incident (there are eyes on the street watching it) and the parklet has been repaired by us."
· Davis Birks: Paradise in Process [OPC]
· De cajón de estacionamiento a jardinera con bancas/ From car park to planter with benches [Informador]

This Week's Top Stories: In the midst of an epic drought it was disconcerting to see a broken pipeline send our precious water through the UCLA campus leaving our Bruin friends, and a lot of their stuff, a soggy mess.
A beautiful craftsman with some slight misses on upgrades, in our humble opinion, specifically in the kitchen which has strayed a bit too much to the white side. But the tile work throughout is pretty spot on. North Pasadena (that's north of the 210 Freeway) tends to get a bad rap for being scary and gang ridden in some neighborhoods, but this little stretch along Claremont looks pretty decent, according to Google Street View. According to the listing, the home was built by Jack Meiselman -- a local developer who built homes in the area around the same time as Alexander. The primary differences between the Alexander and Meiselman homes is in the layout of the kitchens and the placement of bedrooms. At one point the two developers had collaborated but had a falling out, with an interestingly bitchy outcome.
From the Paul Kaplan blog: "Little is known about Jack Meiselman. Jack Meiselman, a local builder, worked with Bob Alexander in a joint venture on a number of the Alexander Construction homes. At some point there was a falling out between the two men, rumor has it that finances were involved, and Jack Meiselman decided to get out of the deal. Seeing a lucrative opportunity in these new tract homes, they were selling like hot cakes after all, he and his brother Bernie Meiselman would follow wherever Alexander was buying land, then they would buy the adjacent parcels. Old school parasites. He came up with a "Modified Alexander" layout and built roughly 350 tract homes sprinkled amongst the Alexander Homes.

Legendary Palm Springs architect William Krisel had even harsher things to say about Meiselman. "Jack Meiselman was a cheap hack who stole our plans and built a poor imitation using inferior materials and unskilled labor! That`s all I have to say about him."
· 2193 E Terry Ln, Palm Springs, CA 92262 [Trulia]
