Expo Line follower Dwight Sturtevant is keeping a close eye on construction of the light rail's extension to Santa Monica and while it seemed hard to fathom that the line would open just a half-mile from the beach by 2015, his pictures make it seem like a real possibility. Work between Palms and (near the) pier appears to be going at quite a clip. The Construction Authority is designing and building bridges all over the Westside, plus installing foundations for the electric poles (the first station to be constructed, in Palms, still looks like a bean though--a little debate humor for this election season). All this work is going on simultaneously with a lawsuit brought by Westside locals (they say the train will cause traffic and slaughter their children, you know the drill by now)--it's now at the California Supreme Court, with motions being filed in advance of proceedings. The California Public Utilities Commission, the state agency that oversees train operations, is now reviewing some of the line's grade-crossings after the same neighborhood group urged the CPUC to reconsider their earlier approval of said crossings.
