Start dusting off that old pair of roller skates, and get a sequined top down off the shelf. A vintage-style roller rink is coming to Union Station later this month.
For two days, August 24 and August 25, the historic station’s former ticket concourse will be opened up to roller skaters and those nostalgic for a bygone era.
The event harkens back to the Disco-era heyday of roller skating in Los Angeles, when roller rinks dotted the urban landscape and fostered the growth of the city’s burgeoning hip hop culture.
At the Union Station rink, DJs will be on hand playing hits from the 1970s and ’80s, as well as more recent tunes, according to The Source.
Members of the LA Roller Girls skating troupe will also be around, offering demonstrations and feedback for novice skaters.
The 3,200-square-foot rink will be open from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. August 24 and from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. August 25. Tickets for the event are already available on Eventbrite and are a bit cheaper if you buy ahead of time. Admission is $7 for an advance ticket and $10 at the door.
A pair of skates is included with admission, but guests can also bring their own roller skates or roller blades.
The good times probably won’t include clams on the half shell, but an event page indicates that drinks will be available for purchase and a skating-themed photo booth will be onsite.
