Onni’s 60-story tower gets green light from City Council

A South Park skyscraper proposed by Canadian developer Onni got the go-ahead Monday from the Los Angeles City Council.

It approved the plans unanimously and without comment.

The 60-story high-rise would replace a surface parking lot on the southeast corner of Olympic Boulevard and Hill Street with a tower holding 700 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments, 15,000 square feet of retail space at the ground floor level, and seven floors of underground parking with 1,075 parking spots.

Chris Dikeakos Architects, a Canadian firm with an office in Los Angeles, is helming the design.

The council also approved the project for the Sustainable Communities Environmental Assessment, which allows for some CEQA streamlining for projects that seek to build near transit.

The city’s environmental analysis of the project projected it would take 30 months to build.

The developer is also working on a major redevelopment of the Times Mirror Square complex in Downtown’s Civic Center. Onni bought the site in 2016 and plans to convert the block into a combination of retail and residential, adding two new towers and preserving the two landmarked Los Angeles Times buildings on the property.
