Passersby of the miraculously under-construction Hollywood Target might have noticed a similarly conspicuous project just south of the big box store that has involved building 60 glassy circular tubes and trucking in 6,500 plants.
That mystery development is Second Home, a London-based coworking company that is opening its first U.S. location in Hollywood in September.
The company quietly purchased the property behind the Target, off Western Avenue, in 2017. Formerly owned by the Assistance League of Southern California, the site includes a Paul Williams-designed building that was renovated as part of the Second Home project.
The new campus was designed by Madrid-based architecture firm Selgascano, with Downtown LA-based Omgivning acting as executive architect for the project.
Hollywood Second Home includes 60 circular acrylic pods united under a single yellow roof. Those pods are surrounded by a lush garden of over 6,000 plants, created on what was once a parking lot.
The campus will also include a bookstore (a signature element of Second Home locations), a podcast recording studio, a 200-seat auditorium, and a restaurant.
Second Home plans to share some of these resources with the neighborhood. “Unlike private members clubs, Second Home Hollywood will offer a diverse cultural program that will be entirely open to the public,” though it does appear that attending events will require a ticket purchase.
Membership for a private pod-studio start at $675 per person per month. Roaming membership, which offers access to shared work areas, is $250 a month for one person.
The company has other locations in London and Lisbon, Portugal.
Updated: Due to incorrect information provided by a public relations firm, an earlier version of this story stated the design was inspired by by the Spruce Goose. That line has been removed.
