Former home of architect Eugene Kinn Choy up for rent in Silver Lake

Born in Guangdong, China in 1912, Eugene Kinn Choy immigrated with his family to California at age 11. Trained at USC’s School of Architecture, he established his own firm in 1947 and was the second Chinese American to join the American Institute of Architects (after I.M. Pei).

Along with many of Chinatown’s commercial and public structures, such as Cathay Bank, Choy designed a number of apartment buildings and single-family residences in and around Silver Lake, including his own family residence, which is now available for lease.

Located on the southwest side of the Silver Lake Reservoir, the redwood-sheathed residence was completed in 1949, and contains three bedrooms and two baths.

Per the description, the 1,600-square-foot home “remains in museum-quality condition throughout,” and features concrete floors, walls of glass, extensive wood paneling, and copious built-in shelving and storage. On a 7,458-square-foot hillside lot, it’s being offered furnished for a monthly rate of $6,500; however, pets and smoking are not allowed.
