Glammed-up 1940s traditional seeks $5.2M in Sunset Plaza

Now available in Sunset Plaza is the former residence of fashion designer James Galanos. Known for supplying elegant gowns to silver screen icons Grace Kelly and Marlene Dietrich, as well as establishment ladies such as Nancy Reagan and Betsy Bloomingdale, Galanos resided in the 1940s-era home for decades, until his death in 2016.

The property hit the market in July 2017, closing sale a month later for $2.255 million. It has since undergone a dramatic makeover overseen by decorator Waldo Fernandez and Clements Design, the mother-and-son firm whose client roster includes Ellen DeGeneres and Jennifer Aniston.

As Architectural Digest reported in a 2011 feature, the home had previously been remodeled by French designer Philippe B. Oates in 1988, and as photos from its last outing on the market show, it was very much an ’80s time capsule, sheathed in shiny black granite, mirrored ceilings, Lucite blocks, and a forest’s worth of wood cabinetry in varying shades.

Following its recent renovation, the Sunset Plaza Drive property’s hard edges have been toned down significantly. It’s also been expanded from 2,408 square feet to 3,300, with a third bedroom and laundry room added and the master suite enlarged.

Other interior updates include a new high-end kitchen, full-slab marble baths, new fixtures, lighting, and flooring, while outside, there’s a brand new lap pool.

On a 7,216-square-foot lot, it’s listed at an asking price of $5.195 million.
