This charming storybook-style home in Beachwood Canyon was built in 1924 and has an intriguing history.
The cottage was designed by architect Henry F. Withey and has been home to a long list of Hollywood professionals and creative-types since then (its current owners are novelist Christian Kracht and director Frauke Finsterwalder). According to listing material, French filmmaker Jacques Demy wrote his classic musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg while staying in the home.
It’s hard to verify the truth of that claim, but the house is whimsical enough to inspire such a vibrant piece of storytelling. Its front door leads directly into a turret-capped entryway, and within the home are dramatic beamed ceilings, French doors, chandeliers and wrought iron sconces, and dark hardwood floors.
The house has four bedrooms and four bathrooms, with 2,549 square feet of floor space. Other details include red tile flooring in the kitchen and entry, new stainless steel appliances, multiple fireplaces, and patterned wallpaper (including some in the bathroom that appears to have been lifted from the Beverly Hills Hotel).
The house sits on a 7,318-square-foot lot with patio space in the back and a terraced yard with shady trees and a children’s playhouse.
Asking price is $1.698 million.
