West Hollywood's historic preservation commission narrowly voted Monday night in favor of plans to incorporate a historic nightclub into a shopping and hotel complex on Robertson Boulevard, WeHoville reports.
Called Robertson Lane, the project would reuse the building that housed legendary gay nightclub The Factory and, before it, early movie camera maker Mitchell Camera. The Factory building would be disassembled and rebuilt, reoriented and 100 feet shorter.
The vote was 4 to 3. According to WeHoville, opposing votes were cast by commissioners who fear changing The Factory building will make it ineligible for landmark designation with the California Register of Historic Resources.
Robertson Lane would also include a new nine-story hotel and six levels of underground parking, with a wide pedestrian pathway cutting through the site.
The developer, West Hollywood-based Faring Capital, still has to clear a couple of more hurdles before it can push forward. The project is scheduled to go before the planning commission on March 1. If approved by that commission, Robertson Lane will head to the City Council for final approval.
