Glendale’s historic ‘Casa Verdugo’ hits the market for $2.8M

Once a popular restaurant, it was later home to Zorro creator Johnston McCulley

This five-bedroom residence in Glendale has a truly fascinating history. Built in 1907, it served as a restaurant for much of its early history.

Known as Casa Verdugo, the eatery was once one of the finest in the Los Angeles region, offering Spanish-influenced cuisine in a romantic setting drawing upon a popular sense of nostalgia for the missions of early California.

Appropriately, the property was later home to author Johnston McCulley, whose Zorro stories helped to romanticize California's later era of Mexican rule.

Per the listing, it also appeared in a film by pioneering silent film director Mack Sennet.

The truly unique residence is centered around a 50-foot courtyard with red tile floors and a vaulted ceiling with clerestory windows. Beyond that impressive feature, it has five bedrooms, three-and-a-quarter baths, a guest house, and two separate basements.

Situated on a nearly half-acre lot, the grounds include a verdant backyard with gardens, an in-ground spa, and an outdoor swing. The home is fronted by a long, covered porch, while large outdoor patios extend into the backyard.

Asking price is $2.755 million.
