Here’s the new plan to makeover Vermont Triangle in Los Feliz

A new plan has emerged for the redesign of the Vermont Triangle, a street median turned pocket park at Vermont Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard.

The median at the border of East Hollywood and Los Feliz was transformed into a little park in 2008, with the addition of seating, lighting, and landscaping. The makeover wound up attracting homeless encampments, and now another redesign is in the works to deter the homeless.

The new plan was decided on by both Los Angeles City Councilmember David Ryu, who represents the area, and the East Hollywood Business Improvement District, reports the Los Feliz Ledger. Their idea involves strategically installing planters on the median so that the only real open space would be a five-foot walkway through the site—wide enough to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, but not wide enough for people to camp out.

The makeover would create a lone path through the median, which would essentially become the public right-of-way through the intersection. That means that it would be “enforceable” for the police to ask anyone who does set up camp in the new path to move along, a spokesman for Ryu tells the Ledger.

A representative for the local BID tells the Ledger that this is seen as a quick fix that should have an immediate effect, and that there are “longer-term plans that we’re mulling around with,” but did not provide details.

The Vermont Triangle was converted into a pocket park at a cost of $800,000. This new plan involving planters is expected to cost less than $100,000.
