A planned 38-story tower in booming South Park is slated to receive a very green neighbor. Developers Mack Urban and AECOM are planning to build a neighborhood park right next to the project, and yesterday they released the first designs for the new public space, called South Grand Park.

Developers say they spent two months gathering public input on the kind of park residents wanted for their neighborhood before releasing these final plans. Designed by Rios Clementi Hale Studios, South Grand Park will feature shade trees, seating, and interactive public art.

South Grand Park is expected to open on South Grand Ave between West 11th and West 12th streets in mid-2019.

“We are taking definitive steps forward in ensuring park space throughout DTLA, and South Grand Park is a significant contributor to that effort,” said Councilmember José Huizar. Developers worked with the councilmember, his DTLA Forward Initiative, and the South Park Business Improvement District on the park project.

Mack Urban’s plans for the surrounding area include building a multi-phase development of new apartments, shops, and restaurants. The first phase of the project—a pair of seven-story structures with 362 apartments—was completed earlier this year.
