As development booms in Koreatown and Downtown LA creep into neighboring Westlake, another big new development is moving forward in the northern part of the neighborhood.
Planned for 1800 West Beverly Boulevard, between Bonnie Brae Street and Burlington Ave, the project would bring 243 new units of housing to the area (it’s not clear yet whether the residences would be rentals or condominiums). 21 of those units would be set aside for residents earning less than half of LA County’s median income.
The structure would rise 79 feet, with six stories at its highest point. In addition to the housing, it would also include 3,500 square feet of ground-floor retail and restaurant space, along with parking for 292 cars and 272 bicycles.
The development would replace several existing buildings on the project site, including a cluster of commercial businesses and an apartment building with 12 units.
According to environmental documents published by the city this week, the building would include open space for residents and amenities like a swimming pool, barbecue areas, and a pair of rooftop decks.
Designed by Humphreys & Partners Architects, the project would have a fairly straightforward design, with uniformly stacked units and glassy balconies. In a testament to the neighborhood’s shifting personality, the ground-floor retail space has been rendered as a coffee shop.
If approved, the project is expected to take about two years to complete, with work beginning early next year and wrapping up in 2020.
