As skyscraper proposals slowly crop up in Westlake, so too are some creative reuse projects. The 1926 Hayworth Theatre—already home to the offices of TV writer Jenji Kohan, creator of Weeds and Orange is the New Black—is set to reopen its ground floor as a comedy club and performance venue, the LA Weekly reports.
The comedy club, called Dynasty Typewriter, has an elaborate, fictional backstory created by its proprietor, comedy booker Jamie Flam, that goes all the way back to 17th century England.
Designed by Stiles O. Clements of the firm Morgan, Walls & Clements, the 199-seat theater will hold a stage, a bar, green rooms, and "space for a future podcast studio." Programming will go beyond stand-up, incorporating live podcasts, musicals, movie screenings, and even “Vaudeville-style variety acts.”
The Dynasty Typewriter will have test shows next month, a soft opening in December, and a full-blown opening in March.
Kohan bought the building in November 2013 for $4 million. Her plan then was to refresh the building, turning second floor into production offices for her writers and editors and reviving the first floor as a theater. Looks like that’s panning out.
