The Georgian Revival mansion once owned by famed movie producer Samuel Goldwyn and now owned by pop singer Taylor Swift is on its way to becoming a Beverly Hills landmark. The city’s Cultural Heritage Commission unanimously approved the nomination Wednesday and sent it to the City Council, which will have the final say.
Commissioner Noah Furie called the property “one of the great estates” in Beverly Hills, and added that he was “thrilled that [the owner] found it important to keep the house and spend the money to restore it because it’s no small thing to do.”
The nearly two-acre Goldwyn estate was commissioned by Goldwyn himself, and he lived there from 1934 until his death. The house, designed by architect Douglas Honnold, stayed in the Goldwyn family for almost 80 years. Swift purchased it in 2015 for $25 million cash.
The long-time occupancy of the house by Goldwyn and his family was a contributing factor in the argument to landmark the home.
Goldwyn was a major player in the early days of the Hollywood film industry. He was vital in establishing Hollywood as a film capital, and he started a film company that later became part of MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayer). Because of his role in the industry the house has hosted plenty of silver screens stars, including Marlene Dietrich and Charlie Chaplin.
