Eastern LA County cities are really eager for the Gold Line extension

Some cities are already developing housing projects near transit stations that aren't even built yet

If approved by voters this November, Measure M would would fund the next extension of the Gold Line to San Bernardino County from its terminus in Azusa. Though the line wouldn't be up and running until 2025, some communities have already started planning and building near future station sites, says the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

If Measure M passes, it would increase the sales tax countywide to fund numerous Metro projects, one of which would be the $1.2-billion expansion of the Gold Line all the way to Montclair. (San Bernardino Associated Governments would pay for the leg of the line that’s not in Los Angeles County, estimated to cost $63 million.) If the ballot measure is approved, construction on the extension would begin in 2019. The stops would be built in Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont, and Montclair.

Montclair, the future end of the line, has been waiting for years for the train. The city has already created land use guidelines for the area around the planned light rail station and built two housing projects near the site. Officials envision a walkable retail and high-density residential corridor sprouting around the station.

San Dimas has also seen development next to the site slated for its planned Gold Line station, a mixed-user that holds "dozens" of residential units (live/work spaces among them), plus office space and retail. The complex, called Grove Station, opened in 2011.

Claremont has been creating transit-oriented projects around its Claremont Village area since 2006, and has "future plans to extend similar development south along Indian Hill Boulevard" in light of the coming Gold Line, Claremont’s city manager tells the Daily Bulletin. Pomona has planned major revitalizations around its future Gold Line station, too.

Perhaps part of the reason that these cities are already getting the ball rolling is that it was initially expected that the Gold Line would be extended out this way much earlier—it was once planned to arrive in 2018. If the measure doesn’t pass, "We would take the position it is again once more a delay and not the end of the Gold Line vision," Montclair City Manager Ed Starr told the Daily Bulletin.
