Apex II, a Tall Tower With a Big Digital Sign, Breaks Ground in DTLA

28 stories of apartments and street-level retail

Work is underway on the second tower of South Park’s Apex development, the Apex II. Set to rise along 9th Street between Flower and Figueroa, the tower will eventually stand 28 stories above the street, with three levels of underground parking, says Urbanize LA.

The tower from developers Holland Partner Group will hold 341 apartments, with a rooftop deck for amenities and ground-floor commercial space. The exterior of the building will be marked by a 6,500-square-foot LED display. The development’s also planning retail at street level.

The project began years ago as a multi-building development called Concerto, overseen by prominent developer Sonny Astani. In the Concerto days, this tower was planned as condos. The economic downturn, plus an ugly bankruptcy battle, saw the death of Concerto, and the project changed hands. Earlier this year, there was news that this tower, next to a sister tower called Apex I, was on the way.

Apex is planned for completion in 2018.

Holland Partner Group is busy in Downtown, with two 24-story projects going up along Spring Street and a shorter project under construction now right next to Vibiana, the former cathedral on Second Street where Little Tokyo meets the Historic Core.
