Earlier this month, we tried to warm some hearts by sharing a video of a cute corgi romping around a massive new home above the Sunset Strip. As it turns out, the luxurious residence of "Sherlock Bones" has a darker past than we initially realized. As TMZ points out, it’s the spot where Brittany Murphy and her husband, screenwriter Simon Monjack, died within six months of one another.
Murphy died in 2009 and Monjack in 2010. The Los Angeles County County coroner’s office determined the cause in both cases was pneumonia and anemia in conjunction with the use of prescription and over-the-counter medications. But the close proximity of their deaths—and the identical causes—have left relatives with unanswered questions.
Murphy’s mother has said toxic mold inside the house might have contributed to her daughter’s death. In 2011, she filed a malpractice lawsuit against her lawyers arguing they should have held the developers of the home responsible for Murphy’s death. The case was settled out of court; the terms were not disclosed, according to City News Service.
The home sold in 2011, according to property records, and was completely redeveloped. The glassy contemporary seen in the corgi video has very little in common with the Mediterranean-style residence where Murphy passed away—other than a massive footprint of nearly 10,000 square feet.
Still, it’s a little disconcerting to watch the video with full knowledge of its tragic backstory—did the video’s plot really have to center on the recent death of the dog’s owner? Also, on an unrelated note: the relationship between the dog and its female caretaker is more than a little creepy, no?
The house is currently listed at $18.4 million. Meanwhile, mystery still surrounds Murphy’s death, and rumors of a new investigation have been swirling since March.
