Summer is here and many Los Angeles renters are on the hunt for new digs (preferably with air conditioning). According to online rental service RadPad, apartment searches nationwide spike between June and August, and LA is no exception. So, what neighborhoods are Angelenos heading to lately? Well, RadPad examined search data over the last month from people currently living in LA and compiled a list of the most frequently-searched places:
- Harbor City
- North Hollywood
- Rosemead
- Long Beach
- Pico Rivera
- Ontario
- Van Nuys
- Compton
- Las Vegas, NV
- Sherman Oaks
Wait, what? Harbor City? What’s going on here?
As it turns out, LA renters are looking to move to some pretty unexpected places this month. With rental prices that have jumped 15 percent since last June, it seems many are willing to venture away from the city center in search of lower prices. Renters in each of the areas on the above list can expect to pay under $2,100 per month for a one-bedroom apartment. In Harbor City, rents are less than half that number. On the downside, its central body of water is currently overrun with snakes.
RadPad also did not include searches by people hoping to stay in the same zip code, so a Silver Laker looking to hop over to the other side of Sunset wouldn’t be reflected in the data.
The cheapest LA area neighborhood on the list is Compton, with rents hovering around $929 per month. The most expensive is Sherman Oaks, where rents are $2,095. That’s a little over the citywide median price of $1,970, according to Zumper.
Coming in at number nine on the list is Las Vegas, backing up reports that many LA residents are leaving for other cities with a lower cost of living. In Vegas, the average one-bedroom rents for just $750.
Overall, about 15 percent of searches on RadPad over the past month were for neighborhoods in other metropolitan areas. Aside from Las Vegas, the most-searched destinations were San Jose, New York City, Dallas, and San Diego.
