John Lautner’s Famed Elrod House in Palm Springs Finds a Buyer

Just a few weeks after its return to the market at a reduced price, John Lautner’s Elrod House in Palm Springs is in escrow, its listing agent confirmed with Curbed. The Modernist residence was put up for $8 million dollars in late May, and was reportedly the subject of a flurry of interest, so it’s no surprise it was claimed so quickly. Variety says the sale price is "very, very close" to the $8-million ask. (The listing agent would not disclose the name of the buyer.)

There's no shortage of Modernist architecture in Palm Springs—the city is the venue for a whole week of events devoted to the style every year—but this house, built for interior designer Arthur Elrod, is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable and famed examples.

It was built into a hillside in 1969, and the interior incorporates boulders from the site, exemplary of Lautner’s ability to fuse nature and architecture. Over the living room is the home's signature concrete dome, which is set atop walls of retractable curved windows. An indoor-outdoor pool flows into the space.

The house’s price tag was chopped from it's original $10.5-million list price, thanks to an extended legal dispute between the house’s previous owner, real estate developer Michael Kilroy, and his creditors that dates back to 2012. In April 2015, Kilroy filed for bankruptcy, and Variety reports that in May of this year, the property was handed over to Lloyds of London, which held the mortgage on the house. Lloyds slashed the price and listed the Elrod later that same month with Nelson Moe Properties.
