Bob Hope Airport's Bad New Name is Hollywood Burbank Airport

Lots of anti-LA sentiment at the Burbank Airport

Burbank's Bob Hop Airport has been on the hunt for a new nickname—nothing official, it'll stay Bob Hope formally—something that included a geographic marker to help out-of-state folks realize where the airport is and how close it is to Los Angeles.

"Bob Hope isn’t doing it," airport commissioner Don Brown tells the Burbank Leader. "The name of the airport — Bob Hope — is just not. We’ve been told by our travel agencies here and been told by the airlines that we’ve got to do something."

Four very similar names were suggested to airport officials in March and they made a decision yesterday. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the LA basin the Hollywood Burbank Airport.

Airport officials voted almost unanimously in favor of the new nickname. The lone dissenter was a commissioner who felt that travelers wouldn't know where Hollywood is; he was hoping that a nickname with Los Angeles in the mix would be chosen. "I think we have to bite the bullet and use Los Angeles and Burbank to get people to see how close we are [to each other]."

See, several Burbank residents, as well as the mayor and at least one airport commissioner were not interested in having Los Angeles mentioned in the airport's name. "Los Angeles does not belong in Burbank," Brown says, adding, "We have our own airport and we don’t have to rely on Los Angeles for that. I don’t think we need Los Angeles." Just Hollywood!
