Hollywood/Highland's Scramble Crosswalk Is Already Making Walking There Safer

Hollywood and Highland was a pretty frightening intersection for pedestrians (though it was hardly the worst intersection in Los Angeles), which made it a great candidate for a scramble crosswalk, which allows for pedestrians to cross the street in all directions at the same time.

Before the crosswalk had been installed, LADOT General Manager Seleta Reynolds explained that "The new intersection design will prioritize the safety and comfort of people walking." The crosswalk went in in November 2015, and so far it seems to be having the desired effect.

A tweet from Vision Zero LA, a city-run initiative to eliminate pedestrian deaths, states that while the intersection had been averaging 13 crashes per year, in the six months since installation of the new crosswalk, there have been zero—a pretty big and important improvement.

Mayor Eric Garcetti has already said that he hopes to see crosswalks like this in DTLA and near Union Station. Maybe with this first successful scramble out of the way, pedestrians in LA can look forward to seeing more of these walker-friendly crossings.
