For a little over two years now, a handful of cities in the San Gabriel Valley have been working together to create a CicLAvia-style open streets event that would close sections of the streets to cars across multiple cities and meet up with some of the new stations on the recently opened extension of the Gold Line light rail, which runs all the way to Azusa.
With the day of the event nearing (June 26), the official route's just been released and goodness is it long. (That's good!) The ride will span more than 17 miles, connecting six Gold Line stations and cruising through seven cities, the official Golden Streets site says (via Streetsblog).
If 17 miles sounds like an enormous length, that's because it is. Most CicLAvias run about six miles; the upcoming multi-city Southeast LA CicLAvia route will be a long one at 10 miles. Hopefully a longer route will mean less crowding and more room to move.
The ride will pass through South Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, and Azusa, and run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Like an official CicLAvia, there will be "activity hubs" along the route, from South Pas to downtown Azusa, though details on exactly what will be at each hub and when are still forthcoming.
