Somebody really loved this spacious Spanish-style residence in Sierra Madre, and it shows in how well maintained the place is. The arches have been restored, the casement windows and French doors have been replaced, and the deck outside one of the bedrooms has been upgraded, too. The 1924 house features a barrel-vaulted ceiling in the living room, a dining room, and bright kitchen.
The four-bedroom, three-bathroom house shares the almost quarter-acre property with an honest-to-goodness bunker. No joke: According to the original permits with the City of Sierra Madre, the structure was listed as "a fallout shelter and playroom," listing agent Jo Von Tiehl tells Curbed. *Together, they add up to 2,460 square feet of living space.
Now, the former fallout shelter functions as a guesthouse or possible rental. Current owner did the major renovations on the fallout shelter about ten years ago that turned it from "a box above the bomb shelter" into a very nice little guesthouse, says Von Tiehl.
The bunker has a kitchen, a bathroom, hookups for a washer and dryer, and a bedroom, which likely benefits from the heavy-duty walls (reportedly two feet thick).
The guesthouse/bunker and the main house are "well distanced from the other [with] separate entrances." The property is asking $1.099 million.
