Look, we all know that Instagram activity is one of the most important indicators of a city’s viability in the modern world, so we’ll just cut right to the chase and say it: CNN is reporting that LA was the world’s sixth-most Instagrammed city in 2016. Not too bad, eh? That’s better than any other city in the U.S., aside from New York, and one spot ahead of Rio de Janiero—which hosted the freaking Olympics.
LA did, however, finish a few spots behind Moscow, which feels embarrassing for some reason.
The city probably could have fared even better if Walt Disney had moved his big theme park about 30 miles northeast. The Disney parks were collectively the most tagged location. Universal Studios was second on that list, and the exclusive-to-Southern California Santa Monica pier took eighth place.
Meanwhile, though LA area hotels failed to impress Instagrammers, two different museums were among the world’s most tagged: LACMA, with its nearly irresistible Urban Light photo op, and the upstart Broad, which beat out New York’s Natural History Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
Of course, it’s not necessarily the selfies with Robert Therrien’s oversized furniture that bring people to Instagram—it’s the food pics, obviously. And, incredibly, New York and Southern California ran the table in the 10 most Instagrammed restaurants list. Malibu’s Nobu finished in second place, with Bottega Louie and Perch also having strong showings. The good old San Pedro Fish Market appeared in seventh place, delivering a stunning upset to Midtown Manhattan’s chic restaurant/nightclub LAVO.
Hopefully a few of these tidbits bring you some sense of civic pride. Next time you’re stuck in traffic on the 405 or trying to take public transit to LAX, remember that when the smartphone-wielding citizens of the world send Oscar Wilde quotes or photos of their pets out into the ether, a very large number of them are doing it in LA.
